Special nights set for college football season Residents of Newberry and Saluda Counties and employees of Newberry’s largest industrial plants will have a special op portunity to watch the New berry College Indians in action on the gridiron this season. "We have set aside a bloc of tickets in our east stands,” head football coach P’red Herren said, for five of our six home games for our neighbors to come and watch some of the best football in South Carolina.” Kendall Mills employees wil be the first group to see th( Indians in action this season; they have been invited to the opening game of the year on Saturday. September 12, against Emory and Henry College of Emory, Va. Kickoff time is 7:30 p. m. The other "Special Nights” on the schedule include: Whitmire Night—7:30 p. m.. .September 19. Gardner-Webb College. Boiling Springs. North Carolina. Saluda Night—7:30 p. m. Oc tober 3. Lenior Rhyne College, Hickory. N. C. Newberry Mills and Owens-Illinois Night—7:30 p m., October 17. Wofford Col lege, Spartanburg. Lower Newberry C o u n t y Day—2:00 p. in., November 14, Samford University. Birming ham, Alabama. Employees of the three firms will be able to purchase tickets for $1.50 from their employer; residents of Whitmire, Saluda, and the communities in Lower Newberry County will be able to purchase their tickets at places to be announced. “The tickets for the special nights must be purchased by noon of the day the game is being played,” Herren added. With the first football game next week, Newberry College’s Coach Ered Herren is putting the squad through three prac tice sessions a day. "Time is short,” Herren said, the three daily workouts are helping us utilize time as much as possible. The morning ses sion is devoted to field work, the afternoon session to kick ing and passing, and the even ing session to a scrimmage "The first week of practice,” he continued, “has taken its toll in nagging injuries, especially pulled muscles, but luckily none of the injuries have been ser ious.” Three sophomores and a freshman have impressed the coaching staff and are possible contenders for the starting line-up in the September 12 match against Emory and Hen ry on Newberry’s Setzler Field. The quartet includes sopho mores Keith McAlister from Co lumbia, who has been switched to the flanker position from end: sophomore transfer Earl Phil lips from Sumter, who is a can didate for a guard position. Or the defensive squad sophomore Durwood Yates from Silver Springs, Md., and freshman Greg Hartle from Newberry ar£ making a strong bid for the starting position. Immunization of children urged by Dept. Lack of protection against communicable diseases can cause many inconviences such as the postponement of football games and disruption of school schedules according to State Health Officer Dr. E. Kenneth Ay cock. Dr. Aycock warns South Car olina parents that failure to im munize their school children can also be expensive and fatal. “Fear of the spread of diph theria in Sumter County promp ted postponement of Manches ter High School’s homecoming football game last year,” Dr. Aycock says, “and class time was lost while the student body and faculty lined up to get shots.” Dr. Aycock says that medi cal expenses for three young sters with diphtheria last year cost parents and taxpayers al most $3,000. Two of the children, one from Sumter County and the other from Richland, died. A third youth survived the di sease following a prolonged hos pital stay. The health officer says that none of the three victims had ever received a diphtheria shot. Protection against the disease is included in the DPT (diph theria, pertussis or whooping cough, and tetanus) series of immunizations which children snouid start when they are two or three months old. “During this school year all of our children will probably be exposed to diphtheria, Ger man measles, or “red” meas les. We urge parents to take their children, especially first graders, to their family doctor or county health department for all the necessary shots,” Dr. Aycock says. Officials of the Center for Di sease Control in Atlanta last week said that the nation can expect limited outbreaks of diph theria in coming months. Epi demics have already been re ported in Chicago, Miami, San Mitonio, and Elgin, Texas. No cases of diphtheria have been reported in South Caro lina so far this year. Approxi mately 600 cases of both Ger man and “red” measles have been reported. Practical Nursing exams be given Examinations for the next class of Practical Nursing at Bailey Memorial Hospital, Clin ton, will be held Tuesday and Wednesday. September 8th and 9th, in the classroom at the hos pital. Hours for testing will be 8 am—12 noon each day. Those interested in attending next years class are urged to plan for this examination. Ex aminations will not be held a- gain for next years class. Plans are for the class to be gin in mid-October. Graduation will be held, for the third graduating class of the school, Sunday, October 18. at Clinton High School. The school is sponsored by Laurens School District 56 and the course is 12 months. Victory Rally at Batesburg The Chairman of the South Carolina Peace by Victory Com mittee, Robert (Bob) Hodges of Columbia, today announced plans for the upcoming Bates burg—Newberry Victory Rally to be held on Friday, Septem ber 11th, at the Batesburg Ci vic Auditorium beginning at 8 pm. Mr. Hodges noted that ral lies calling for Victory over the Communists in Vietnam are be ing held throughout the State and Nation to gain support in preparation for the United States March for Victory to be held on October 3rd, in Wash ington, D. C. Dr. Wes Auger, God and Coun try Speaker, and Southern Co ordinator for the United States March for Victory will be the principal speaker at the Sep tember 11th Rally at the Bates burg Civic Auditorium. The U. S. March for Victory Rally and Parade in Washing ton is being sponsored by Dr. Carl Mclntire, voice of the 20th Century Reformation Hour, a religious broadcast heard daily over WKMG at Newberry, and WBLR at Batesburg. These rallies will call first for the bringing home of the pri soners of War now being held in North Vietnam, and second for an all-out military victory in Vietnam. Freedom of Choice in the education of children, and prayer and bible reading back in schools will also be em phasized, Mr. Hodges stated. Nelson wins ii i * Richard Bruce Nelson is one of nine freshmen at Newberry College who has been awarded a President’s Scholarship for the 1970-71 school year accord ing to Dr. Conrad B.
