Drunk driving convictions up Convictions for driving under the influence of intoxicants has shown a 24 percent increase during February and March of 1970 as compared to the same two months in 1969 according to State Highway Department statistics. February and March figures were used, according to Colonel P. F. Thompson, Director of the South Carolina Highway Depart ment’s Traffic Law Encorce- ment Division, to help judge the 2ffectiveness of the state’s Im plied Consent Law. This law :ame into full operation on Feb. I with chemical testing utiliz ing an electro-chemical device mown as the Breathalyzer be ing initiated on a statewide oasis at that time. “The implied consent law is proving to be a great help to traffic enforcement officials,” said Colonel Thompson. “This is evidenced in our 24 percent increase in convictions during the first two months of the law’s full operation.” The implied consent law says, in effect, that driving on a South Carolina highway by any person constitutes “implied con sent” to take a chemical test to determine the degree of al coholic content of his blood if he has been arrested for driv ing under the influence of in toxicating liquor. If he refuses, his driver’s license is automat ically suspended for 90 days. This suspension is in addition to any suspension which might result if he is found guilty. WITH MEN IN The SERVICES WICHITA FALLS - Airman James C. Inabinet, Jr., son of J. C. Inabinet of Richmond, Cal., has graduated at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas from the U. S. Air Force medical ser vices specialist course. The airman, who was trained to assist in the care and treat ment of patients, is being as signed to Tachikawa AB, Japan for duty with the Pacific Air Forces. Airman Inabinet, a 1965 grad uate of Newberry High School, received his A. B. degree in 1969 from Newberry College. His wife, Adrienne, is a daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ber nard, 1626 Clarkson Avenue.
