The high-flying Indians have chalked up a 7-0 record in pre-Christmas activity. The next game is slated for January 2 when the tribe meets the Allen University Yellow Jackets in the Newberry College Invitational Doubleheader. Tournament starts Friday at College The Newberry College Indians, one of two undefeated collegiate basketball teams in South Caro lina, began working out Tues day after nearly three weeks of rest following the fall semes ter examinations and the Christ mas holidays. The squad will resume play this week with a 7-0 record; the only other undefeated five in the state is Baptist College of Charleston with a 5-0 record. The team has received recogni tion from the sports writers and sportscasters in the weekly poll by the Associated Press of small college basketball teams. Friday, the fourth annual Newberry College Invitational Doubleheader opens with Pres byterian College meeting Emory and Henry College from Emory, Va. at 7 p in., and Newberry College clashing with Allen Un iversity of Columbia in the se cond game. On Saturday night the two teams switch with Pres byterian opposing Allen in the first match at 7 p.m. and New berry drawing Emory and Hen ry in the second game. Coach Nield Gordon plans to use his regular starting line-up for the two games this week end with Steve Hollingsworth and Buddy Moore, forwards; Charles Gilroy, center; and Kev in Howard and Charles Neal, guards. Admission for the tournaments is $1.50 for adults and $1.00 for students for each night. W. G. Graham dies at home William Guy Graham, 75, died Thursday morning at his home, Route 2, Pomaria, after a short illness. Mr. Graham was born and reared in the St. Matthews sect ion of the county and was the son of the late William Bow man and Lelah Cromer Gra ham. He was a retired farmer, a veteran of World War I, and a member of St. Matthews Luth eran Church. Surviving are three brothers, Ernest and Horace Graham, of Whitmire and Roland Graham of Newberry; five sisters, Mrs. Enos Kinard, Mrs. E. J. Kinard, both of Prosperity, Mrs. John William Ringer of Pomaria, Mrs. Marvin Dawkins and Mrs. Her man Gilliam, both of Whitmire and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Friday from his church with Rev. Allan Fellman conducting. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Paysinger service held Mrs. Lester Bloom Paysing er, widow of S. Henry Paysinger died Wednesday night at the Lowman Home after a linger ing illness. Mrs. Paysinger was born in Charlotte, the daughter of the late John F. and Mary Ellison Bloom. Before her marriage, she taught in the city schools of Charlotte. She was a mem ber of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Mrs. Paysinger is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Mary Paysinger Campbell of Daytona Beach, Fla., and two grandchildren; also several nep hews and nieces. PYneral services were con ducted Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by Dr. Henry A. McCullough and Rev. W. A. Beckham. Burial was in Colony Lutheran Church cemetery. Small boy dies m bouse fire A three-year-old boy died Monday at 8 a m. when his home on Pike Circle here was gutted by fire. Coroner George R. Summer identified the victim as John Wesley Chalmers, Jr. The child and his grandmother, Mrs. Ma mie Mae Hartley, 59, were in the house when the fire broke out. The coroner said the grand mother ran out of the house, thinking the child was follow ing her. But the little boy’s pants apparently had caught on a nail protruding from the win dow sill, where his burned body was found later, the coroner said. Firemen were called to the scene by a neighbor. The moth er, Mrs. Georgia Mae Chalmers was at work. The coroner said no inquest is planned. INCOME TAX RETURNS State and Federal j. ed. Wiles, president of Newberry College, for Wessels Library. The book was given to the College by Thomas H. Leitzey, right, on behalf of the Newberry County Retired Educa tors’ Association.
