(Continued from Page 1) As to the arguments that oth er expenses were coming up: if this is true, why did council not consider them when the bud get was adopted? If they were acting in good faith, then they were NOT anticipating any ex tra funds for the extra things they are now talking about. The Mayor stated that the tax levy could not now be changed. Perhaps not but I don’t under stand why it couldn’t. Seems that the ordinance adopting the budget and levy could simply be amended to eliminate the extra eight mills put on because the city thought it was going to lose some money. It may be that by this time, the tax not ices are already in preparation and that would cause some complications; however, they were NOT in preparation at the time this matter was brought to the attention of the city. Gentlemen of Council, let’s give the public the whole truth. SPORTSMANSHIP After the Newberry-Woodruff football game, played at Wood ruff Friday night, I was asked, “Are you going to write some thing about our team?” About the team, yes, and the Band, but mostly about the poor sportsmanship of the Woodruff Wolverine supporters. As soon as Newberry had a score on the board, and Wood ruff had nothing, the heckling began. So far as 1 know, the crowd attending from Newberry—and it was a crowd—kept “it’s cool” and so avoided any fights which some of the Wolverine fans were itch ing for. Our band members, who are usually given the third quarter off to get something to eat af ter playing during the first half at at half time, showed good judgment and quickly returned to the stands when hostile Wood ruff fans tried to pick a fight. And when our buses left to return to Newberry, there were still some of the angry ones around to throw rocks at the buses. When the game was over, the mother of one of the Woodruff band members told me apolo getically, “They aren’t accust omed to losing, and I’m afraid they aren’t very nice about it.” I hope that the students of our high school and the adult supporters of the team will nev er act in this manner. When losing a game makes one lose his common decency, then it’s time to quit playing football. Now for the game: Coach Kimmel and his assistants are doing a wonderful job in build ing up the Bulldog footballers. Tnere were some mistakes, as there always are, but they were few and the good plays by far outweighed the. bad. I do not know all of the team mem bers and I would not pick out any one for especial mention, because when a team plays as well defensively and offensively as the Newberry team did Fri day night, every member had to be doing his part. The com bination of a win over Lexing ton the previous week, and a humiliating memory of past Woodruff scores when our Bull dogs have been beaten by 30, 40 or 50 points, apparently in spired the team to do it’s best, and the result was a hard-won 14-0 victory. Our band, under the compe tent direction of Miss Lorraine Paris, looked and sounded fine. The band and the apparently tireless cheerleaders, along with the fans, gave continuous sup port to the Bulldogs on the field. In case there are those who are wondering why the band members were not in uni form, it is because new uni forms have been ordered, and are expected to arrive almost any day, but they aren’t here yet. I thought they looked good in their white shirts and slacks with black ties and shoes. Speaking of the uniforms, the band could use a little help in paying for them, so if you are in a generous mood, sit down and write a check to the New berry High School Band and send it to Miss Paris. This or ganization, which represents our city so well on so many occas ions, deserves your support. CONSTITUTION WEEK The Jasper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Re volution is observing Constitu tion Week. Newberry, S. C. Fuller resigns city position P. K. Fuller has resigned as City Recreation Director to accept a position with the state recreation department. His resignation was announc ed in the following letter ad dressed to City Manager K. W. Riebe: “It is with mixed emotions that I send this letter to you. The past thirteen years that I have served as Director of Re creation for the City of New berry have been rewarding ones for me. I have, at this time, what I consider a very fine job opportunity and find it neces sary to give up this position with the City of Newberry. I want to thank you for your in terest and support of the Re man. By an Act of Congress and Presidential Proclamation the week September 17-23 has been set aside as Constitution Week with September 17 as Constitu tion Day. Our citizens are call ed upon to keep the Faith of our Founding Fathers. Special attention should be given to this Document’s sound provis ions, high principles, and un surpassed ideals. Please accept this letter as one of resignation, effective Thursday, September 26, 1969.” Poultry show be Saturday The 4-H Poultry Show and Sale will be held Saturday, Sep tember 20 at the Newberry County Fairgrounds. Sixteen 4-H club boys and girls will exhibit about 150 birds at the show at 9:30 a.m. Each of these mem bers received 100 straight run or 50 pullets in March and are returning some of their best pullets to the sale. The birds will be auctioned off in lots of 8, 10, and 14 to the highest bidder. Sale time is 10 a.m. The proceeds of the sale will go to buy chickens for other 4-H’ers next year. A representative of the Clem- son University Extension Poul try Department will judge the pullets. Prizes and ribbons are furnished by Sears Foundation. The following 4-H Club mem bers were the recipients of the 4-H pullets this year: Lynn Boy- ter, Ervin Epps, Douglas R. Sunday fire investigated The origin of a fire which caused about $1,000 damage to a vacant school building here late Sunday night was under in vestigation this week. Fire Chief Ed Hazel said the blaze was of a “suspicious nat ure” and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire department extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes after answering the alarm at the for mer Drayton Street school build ing. The fire was confined to two classrooms. About 150 to 200 persons might be saved in South Carolina with complete use of safety seat belts in a single year, the South Caro lina Highway Department says Wouldn’t you really rather?
