McWhirter, 76, of Union died Wednesday in a Un ion nursing home. Funeral services were held Friday in the First Baptist Church of Union with burial fol lowing in Union Memorial Gar dens. Mr. McWhirter was born in Newberry, the son of the late Chrissie Sligh and Christopher Columbus McWhirter. He at tended Wofford and Davidson Colleges. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. K. T. Hall of Columbia and Mrs. James D. Hope of Sa vannah, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Anne Gruber of Charleston and Mrs. Samuel Lipscomb of Jones- ville; and a brother, Edward McWhirter of Jonesville. Perry Turner wreck victim Perry David Turner, 15, son of the Rev. Perry W. and Nedra Bauknight Turner of Pelzer died Sunday in a two-car wreck near Lake City. He was a member of the 10th grade at Palmetto High School and the senior band. Surviving also are two sis ters, Miss Vickie Turner, Win- throp College and Miss Kathy Turner of the home; and grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bauknight of Newberry. Funeral services were held on Wednesday with burial follow ing later in Newberry. Rev. and Mrs. Turner and their daughters are patients in the Florence Hospital, suffering from injuries sustained in the wreck. Mrs. Hornsby, 97, rites Thursday Mrs. Mamie Buzhardt Horns by, 97, widow of William W. Hornsby, died late last Tuesday night at the Jesse Frank Haw kins Nursing Home, after a lin gering illness. She is survived by one son, W. Douglas Hornsby of New berry; one granddaughter, Miss Nancy Hornsby of Newberry. Funeral services were con ducted at 5 p.m. Thursday at Central Methodist Church by Dr. George Duffie. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Tom Hayes, Fred Hayes, Herman Langford, Lester Lee Beden- baugh, Harry Epting, and Dave Hayes. COUNTY NATIVE DIES TUESDAY Elmer Carey Warner, 77, of Route 2, Ninety Six, died Tues day. He was born in Newberry County, son of the late Marion D. and Ida Long Warner, but had spent most of his life in Greenwood County. He was a retired farmer.
