SEC. B—PAGE 4—The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C. Dec. 26th, 1968 One of the most revered Christmas customs Is the reenact ment of Christ’s birth with a Nativity Scene. This custom was popularized in the 13th century by St. Francis of Assis. At a time when few books were available, and most people couldn't read anyway, St. Francis dramatized the Nativity in 1224, to help the people of Greccio, Italy, understand thie meaning of Christmas. Villagers took the parts of Mary, Joseph, and shepherds. Live animals were used, and a life-sized wax figure of the Christ Child was placed in the manger. It was St. Francis who led the-villagers in joyous dan cing around the Nativity Scene. On the twelfth day of Christmas My true love said to me Twelve drummers drumming, Eleven pipers piping, Ten Lords a leaping, Nine ladies dancing, Eight maids a-milking, Seven swans a-swimming, Six geese a-laying, Five golden rings. . . PALESTINE At Christmas time, thou sands of pilgrims from all over the world come to the little village of Bethlehem to visit the birthplace of Jesus. They go to the Church of The Nativity which stands over the sacred place. First they enter the Latin Chapel, fourteen centuries old, then they descend to the Grotto of the Nativity. There, a Latin inscription on a silver star inlaid in a small recess of the wall says, "Here, of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ was born." This is where Christmas began. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Combine with the milk mixture. Add cheese and flour; blend well. Cover batter and set in a warm place for 45 minutes. Stir the batter down and beat for half a minute. Pour into a greased 1 1/2 quart casserole or two 9x5 loaf pans.
