Brief talks were made by both Senator Long and Mr. Lake in which each asked for unity and support of the county Democratic ticket in the Novem ber 3th General Election. Both candidates spoke openly in favor of each other’s candidacy and asked the voters to -uj port the County Democratic ticket in the election. Amendment is defended by committee For the information of the citizens of Newberry County, the members of the Newberry County Development Board Ed ucation Committee have issued a statement concerning Local Constitutional Amendment 8. The statement, in part: “ We are suprised to learn that certain people are spread ing misleading statements throughout Newberry County concerning amendment eight. ‘‘It puzzles us, to say the least, that some are spreading rumors about the amendment and its intention. “We want to take these ru mors one by one and answer them to the fullest of our abil ity. In this way we hope to stop these rumors. “The public support for a- mendment eight has grown rap idly and we appreciate the thousands of people who are in favor of this amendment. “Therefore, we will not sit idly by and allow any incorrect information to endanger the best interests of all our people in Newberry County.” The committee then listed a number of what it calls “ru mors”, with rebuttal for each point. Prior to the presentation of Taylor named candidate for School Board The Newberry County Dem ocratic Executive Committee met here Monday morning and named W. E. “Billy” Taylor, Jr., an employee 1 of the Oakland Plant of Kendall Company as a candidate for election to a seat on the Newberry County Board of Education, replacing Ralph T. Williams who died at his home Thursday. According to election laws, if a candidate dies, withdraws or becomes disqualified after his name has been printed on the ballot, a new candidate may he nominated to fill the vacancy. All votes cast for the former candidate will he counted as votes for the replacement can didate. Mr. Taylor’s running mate on the Democratic ticket is J. Kd Young. Ropublican op position for the two seats is furnished by Henry Mills and Rev. Thomas Damn. In District 2, Democrats W. Hunter Caldwell and David Lu ther Ruff are opposed In' Re publicans David Miller and Mi- chat 1 1 Chappell.
