C., Thursday, May 23, 1968 College bans drinking, sex on campus Trustees of Newberry College have voted unanimously to con tinue enforcement of rules banning alcohol and forbidding students to have visitors of the opposite sex in their dormitory rooms. Dr. A. G. D. Wiles, president of the Lutheran-supported co educational college, said the ac tion of the Board was taken at its meeting in Newberry May 9th. Newberry students are not permitted to consume or pos sess alcoholic beverages on the campus or at college functions. Living quarters are off-limits for dating, with men and wo men students being permitted to meet only in the social lounge areas of dormitories. Some students have been pressing for relaxation of the rules. Dr. Wiles said. He des cribed the discussion as “some times heated, but conducted in an atmosphere of mutual res pect.” He added that he feels the Board’s resolution “is not in tended to foreclose all discuss ion, but it certainly is a very strong reaffirmation of the college’s long established trad ition in these matters of stu dent conduct.” Newberry is a church-relat ed college, the president point ed out, and its constitution re quires the school “to offer young men and young women higher education under posi tive Christian influences.” The college itraditionally has op posed drinking, he said, “ant we have stood positively for such basic Christian virtues as clean personal living and whole some inter-personal relation ships, especially in matters re lated to sex.” Newberry College has an en rollment of 850. The school, es tablished in 1856, is operated by the South Carolina, Flor ida and Southeastern (Geor gia, Alabama, Tennessee am Mississippi) Synods of the Lu theran Church in America. Academy holds perents’ meet Last Friday evening the Newberry Academy auditorium was practically filled for the last parents’ meeting of the session. Under the direction of Mrs. May Tarrant Epting, music teacher, pupils in the various grades gave in appropriate costume and song “A Musical Calendar,” a skit for each month. President James C. Kinard announced some plans for the coming year. He said that there had been arranged band in struction, and baton lessons, to be given after school hours. He said that there would be other opportunities offered but that the school would continue to concentrate on high academ ic w r ork during the school hours from 8:30 to 1:30. The president stated that the ninth grade would be added this next session if there should be a sufficient number of definite applications; that the enrollment in the first eight grades was already high er than that of the current session and he urged that all applications be sent in im mediately as the size of all classes, regardless of the de mand, would have to be limited so as to insure personal atten tion to every child. The kindergarten enrolment for next year was announced Ic be 28, with room for a few more applicants. The Board of Directors had appointed Senator Eugene C. Griffith to speak for the en- Graduation exercises at Mid- Carolina High school will be held in the school gymtorium for the class of 1968 at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28. There are 81 candidates for gradua tion. The Salutatory address will be given by Linda Lathrop, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. R. Lathrop of Pomaria. The Valedictory address will be given by Dean Lominick, son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Lom inick of Pomaria. Commence ment speaker will be Ron Ra der, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Kirby Rader of Prosperity. Principal H. M. Bedenbaugh will present the diplomas. Honor graduates are: Dean Lominick, Linda Lathrop, Alice Graham, Carol Shealy, Hugh Bedenbaugh, Janis Dominick, Beverley Hawkins, Keith Lake, and Lynn Wessinger. Baccalaureate services will be held on Sunday night, May 26 at 8 p.m. in the gymtorium. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. C. L. Robinson, pastor of St. Phillips Lutheran church. Gets degree in “Wifeology” Augusta, Ga.—Mrs. W.- Mich ael Bailey, the former Nancy Senn of Newberry, has been a- warded a degfee in “Medical Wifeology” by the Medical Col lege of Georgia. The traditional ceremony took place in Augusta when the wive. 1 of senior medical students w T ere honored by the faculty and pre sented degrees by Dr. Curtis Carter, Associate Dean of the School of Medicine. The exercise, an annual event of the School of Medicine, is highlighted by the conferring of the degree of “Wife of Med icine.” The graduation certi ficate declares that the recip ient has received her diploma for“. . . years of medical wife- ology, having succeeded in rous ing her spouse in the mornings, •ending him off to school, hear ing his lessons, keeping the cof fee hot at all hours, and wait ing patiently for him to return from his patients.” will be held at 10 a.m., May 24 at the school. Participants on the program will be the honor graduates. All senior class members are participants in Awards Day. Mrs. Bailey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Senn of Route 3, Newberry. She is a graduate of Newberry Hign School and was graduated from the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing. Memorial Day service set On Sunday, May 26, at 6:00 o’clock p.m. in Rosemont Cem etery, Dr. James C. Kinard will deliver the memorial ad dress and immediately after Taps, members of Post No. 24 American Legion will place a flag on each of the graves of the Veterans. Thepublic is invited to at tend this memorial service. Other Legionaires will place a flag on the graves of all Veterans in every cemetery in the county.
