Mrs. Harmon asks election as Court Clerk Mrs. Mildred R. Harmon to day announced her candidacy for re-election to the office of Clerk of Court in the June Democratic primary. Mrs. Harmon was appointed to the position by Governor Robert McNair in November of 1966 to fill the unexpired term of the late Burke M. Wise. Prior to l^er appointment, she had served in the capacity of Deputy Clerk since September of 1957. Mrs. Harmon first became as sociated with the Clerk’s office as a secretary on January f, 1953. She served a number of years as secretary to several attorneys in Newberry, and during World War II she was secretary to the Provost Mar shal at the Port of Embarka tion, Charleston. Following this, she returned to Newberry and worked in the county Auditor s office. A native of Newberry, she is the daughter of Mrs. Amelia Holt Reeves and the late George W. Reeves. She is married to F. J. Harmon and they have two sons, Jimmy, 23, a student at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla., and Michael, 20, a student at Palmer Col lege in Columbia. She is a member of Central Methodist Church of Newberry and the American Legion Post 24 Auxiliary. Announces for Auditor post Mrs. Jeanette K. Hamm an nounced today that she would be a candidate for election to the office which she now holds as Newberry County Auditor. She has filed as a candidate in the Democratic Primary to be held in June. Mrs. Hamm was appointed Newberry County Auditor by Governor Robert E. McNair in February 1967 following the untimely death of Newberry County Auditor Ralph B. Black. Mrs. Hamm has since such time filled the unexpired term of Mr. Black. As of July 1, 1968, Mrs. Hamm will have had 17 years of experience in the office of the Auditor for Newberiy coun ty, having first been appointed as joint Clerk to Former Audi tor Pinckney N. Abrams and Treasurer J. Ray Dawkins on July 1, 1951, and thereafter in 1956, Mrs. Hamm was appoint ed full-time Clerk to Auditor Ralph B. Black which position she held until 1965 when the position of Deputy Auditor was created by legislative Act. Mrs. Hamm was the first nerson to hold the position of Deputy Auditor for Newberry County, which position she held from her appointment in 1965 until her appointment as Auditor in 1967. Mrs. Hamm is the daughter of Mrs. Agnes Fipp Koon and the late J. L. Koon and received her high school education at Prosperity High School and thereafter received a business course at Newberry College prior to commencing her work in the Auditor’s office in 1951. She is married to Glenn L. Hamm of Prosperity and has one son Laddy, who is present ly a student at Prosperity Ele mentary School. Mrs. Hamm is a member of St. Luke’s Luth eran Church. At the present time Mrs. Hamm is assisted in her office by Mrs. Elizabeth D. Epting who was appointed Deputy Auditor following Mrs. Hamm’s appointment as Auditor and who has served in the Auditor’s office for the past 11 years. Following the promotion of Mrs. Epting to Deputy Audi tor, Mrs. Nancy P. Owens was appointed Clerk, in which cap acity she now serves. In announcing her candidacy for Auditor, Mrs. Hamm made the following statement: “I am offering my services as Auditor for Newberry Coun ty based upon my 17 years of experience in this office and my belief that I am well qualified to serve the citizens of Newberry County in this capacity. My platform in this campaign is my record of past service and the continued ef ficient and courteous operation of this office. It is my firm belief that I am fully and com pletely capable of carrying on the duties of Newberry Coun ty Auditor and I earnestly and sincerely solicit the support of every citizen in Newberry County.” Gene Shealy in Sheriff race B. Eugene (Gene) Shealy completing first term os New berry County Magistrate Dis trict Number 2, is seeking elec tion to the office of Sheriff, Newberry County, in the June Democratic primary. Native of Newberry, he is the son of Berley C. and Alice Hiller Shealy. Married to the former Gladys Eargle, he has two children, Milton E. Shealy of Newberry and Mrs. David W. (Martha) Bowers, Prosper ity. Mr. Shealy attended New berry city schools. He is a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran church, Vice Chair man Church Council, Civitan Club Director and member of Board of Directors Newberry County Law Enforcement As sociation. ACTION COMMITTEE SETS MEETING The regular monthly meeting of the Executive Committee Newberiy-Saluda Community Action, Inc. will meet at 7:30 Spelling Bee on April 6th The Newberry County spell ing contest will be held at Newberry High school at 9:30 a.m. April 6. Any student of the fifth sixth, seventh and eighth grades who is not 16 years of age at the time of the contest is eligible. Each of these grades has winners to compete to determine a school winner. School finalists should be selected by the week of March 4-9. Prizes for the pounty will be offered as usual, $15, $10, and $5. The school from which the state winner is chosen is to receive $100 in addition to other prizes.
