As we approach the Thanks giving holiday, our thoughts are instinctively directed to that day some doU years ago when the early English settlers enjoyed a fea.>t of wdld game in an atmosphere of a true giving of thanks. The pilgrims had much to be thankful for— mainly, that they had survived hardship and disease and were able to eke out an existence on virgin soil in a land yet untapped and untamed. They were also thankful to he liv ing in freedom; free of op pression, Dee to choose their own destinies. rids great her.tape id gi at - itmh for the material and in- targible blessings -o many u- enjoy -liould Il'Ver lose mean ng to A mermans, foi many ways the nation is faced wit n challenge-- w hich threaten our survival as a peo ple. We -hould not only show a true spirit of thanksgiving for what we have but demon strate, also, a genuine con cern for the needs of others. We h ave unusual bountv in oi it - in ill our great land. We also have poverty, blight, ignorance, and hunger—and until the day when all these are wiped away and replaced with material benefits for all in need, there can be no true satisfaction or contentment with the status quo. Those in positions of plenty have a responsibility to help provide for those deprived. The various programs of assistance maintained and pursued by government cannot provide all the answers or fulfill all the requirements necessary to feed ing, clothing, and caring for the oppressed or rejected. Each individual has a responsibility to himself and to the welfare (T others. This concept should not be construed as socialism, hut humanitarianism. This country is too great, too blessed and too rich to al low for suffering and depriva tion. As we give thanks on this November 2d, let us re member the needs of others and work together to resolve them. .-titutioii. as 1 i ,-( all. irda i m- assault with intent to ravmh. that each < ounty Miali have a In. .--(a 'genation, lancny, murder, Senator.
