Lander alumni set meeting Lander College alumni living in Newberry and Fairfield coun ties will hold their annual area meeting on Sunday, October 29, at 3:30 p.m. The afternoon drop -in will be held at the Civitan Building in Prosperity. Special guests for the meet ing will be Dr. Maybelle Cole man of Greenwood; Mrs. R. A. Hollingsworth, registrar and director of admissions at Lan der; and Mrs. Ralph Norman, director of alumni affairs. Mrs. Norman will bring alumni up-to -date on happenings at the col- ege and in the Alumni Assoc iation. Mrs. Raymond Brock of Pros perity is area director. Those who intend to go to the meet ing are asked' to notify Mrs. Brock. Attend meet in Chesnee The Northern District Con ference of the S. C. Federation of Women’s Clubs was held in Chesnee on October 11. Among those attending were Mrs. F. Scott Elliott, chairman of Ep silon Omicron Division of the Education Department; Mrs. J. R.Suber Jr., president and Mrs. Marvin Abrams and Mrs. J. W. Hipp of the Whitmire Biograph ical Club. The 1968 conference will be held at Whitmire. Is listed as civic leader The Board of Advisory Edi tors of “Oustanding Civic Leaders of America” has sent certificate to Prof Flavel Scott Elliott Sr. stating that his name and biography have been chosen to appear in the 1967 volume to be printed in January. The Certificate is imprinted “In recognition of outstanding ability, accomplish ments and service tocommunity, country and profession.” Local AAUW is honored A five hundred dollar schol arship was recently named in honor of the Newberry Branch of the American Association of University Women for their 100 percent increment in contribu tions to the Fellowship pro- gram. Mrs. Philip T. Kelly, local president, was presented a cita tion in behalf of the local branch at the state executive committee meeting held in Co lumbia last Saturday. Carrall Vernon Scott and Camilla Sharon King of Whit mire were married at Whitmire October 7. Edgar Sellers Gaffney and Vanus Elaine Tankersley of Whitmire were married Oct. 11 at Whitmire. Local park site qualifies for Federal aid The Wise Creek Park Acqui sition and Development Project has been qualified by South Carolina for $59,717 in Federal funds through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the Department of Parks, Recrea tion and Tourism announced recently. Bob Hickman, director of the department, pointed out, how ever; that the project must still be approved by the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation before the Federal funds are obligated. Under the Federal program, the city of Newberry will have to acquire and develop the area at a cost of $119,434 and then be reimbursed $59,717 by the federal government. Upon completion the project will provide for picnic facili ties, athletic fields, multi-pur pose play area and playgrounds in the Wise street community of Newberry. The Land and Water Conser vation Fund is a grants-in-aid program administered through the Department of the Interior that assists Federal, state and local agencies in meeting pre sent and future outdoor recre ation demands and needs. Local projects must have state ap proval before being submitted to the United States agency. At Library Workshop Miss Kate Tanner, librarian of the Newberry-Saluda Regio nal Library, will attend a man agement workshop in Colum bia, October 16-18. Miss Tanner will join 29 other South Carolina public librarians for thespecial three- day session, co-sponsored by the South Carolina State Lib rary Board and the Bureau of Governmental Research and Service of the University of South Carolina. Miss Jewel C. Hardkopf, lib rarian-management consultant, will again conduct the work shop. She conducted a similar workshop in Columbia in May of this year and has also con ducted other workshops in Wisconsin, Oregon, and Cali fornia. A teacher and lecturer, Miss Hardkopf has worked in New York as management analyst at the Brooklyn Public Library and as superintendent of book ordering at the New York Pub lic Library. The State Library Board holds periodic meetings and workshops to improve admin istrative techniques and pro cedures for better public lib rary service. VISITORS IN ELLIOTT HOME Guests in the home of Prof, and Mrs. F. Scott Elliott Sr. and Scott Elliott Jr. over the weekend were William Ted Conn, Jack Conn and Mr. and Mrs. Barney Conn of Columbus, Miss. They are the Elliott’s nephews. There were six sons in the family of Mrs. Elliott’s dec eased brother who have served in the Armed Forces of the USA. James and Williard Conn served with the Marines in World War II and were fight ing side by side on Okinawa when Willard lost his life. Ted served in Greenland and Jack has just returned from a year’s duty in Vietnam. Louis w T as stationed at Fort Jackson for his training and Barney is stationed there now, expecting to be sent to Vietnam in the near future. GRAY COMPLETES VEHICLE COURSE Army Private Walter J. Gray, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Gray, Route 2, New berry, S. C., completed a light vehicle driver course at Ft. Jackson, S. C., Sept. 29. During the course, he was trained in the operation and maintenance of military veh icles up to and including the two and one-half ton truck.
