Perhaps by next Presidential election, the voice of the people will be heard. ‘GENE’ SUCCUMBS Gene Gary died last week at Newberry County Memorial hospital after an illness of several months. Perhaps many newcomers would not recognize the name, but those of us who have lived in Newberry for many years knew Gene as a fine, Christian gentleman. From the time I can remember, Qene served as custodian of the bank building. He was always friendly, polite, and helpful. It would be hard to find any person, Negro or white, who ever had a harsh word for Gene Gary. He was highly respected by all who knew him. The brief portrait on the fun eral program perhaps best describes the man he was.. SCHOOL OPENING . . . (Continued from page 1) school students to Newberry high will leave at 7:45 and will return around 3 p.m.. School bus drivers for this year are Wayne Martin, Jane Chas- teen, Wayne Hawkins, and Mike Bedenbaugh. The lunch program will be gin full operations on Tuesday, September 5, and continue thruout the entire session (ex cept the days on which semes ter exams are conducted). The price of lunches will be $1.25 per week. The price of a car ton of milk is 4c (extra milk). Mrs. Mabel C. Nichols and Mrs. Roberta L. Longshore will serve as caterers. Students entering the first grade must, by state law, be six years old on or before Nov ember 1. Also, they must be vaccinated against smallpox. Parents are required to furnish legal birth certificates. Textbooks are rent free in grades one through six. Text books will be issued to the first six grades and rented to 7th and 8th grades on Thursday, August 31. A list of workbooks and other materials will be given to all students on the opening day of school. In addi tion, it would be most helpful if parents would come prepar ed to pay for scholastic accid ent insurance (2.25 yearly), if desired. School personnel is as follows: Mrs. Irene D. If not convenient to visit, call 4806 during the day or 0819 in the evening. 174tc Seeks Office Claude Partain, candidate for nomination to city council in the Democratic primary, was born in Elbert county, Georgia and was educated in the coun ty schools of Georgia. He mov ed to Greenwood and worked as a mechanic and service man ager for approximately ten years before coming to New berry in 1940, where he has been in the automobile business since that time. He operated Partain’s Gar age for 10 years and in early 1963 he closed his shop to be come associated with the City of Newberry as a mechanic and fireman with the Newberry Fire department. He left the employ of the city last Octo ber and is presently service manager for Shealy Motor Co. Mr. Partain served two years in the U. S. Navy during World War II, having a rate of MOM2C. He saw service in the Atlantic and Pacific areas. Thecandidate is a member of the Aveleigh Presbyterian church, of Masonic Lodge 87 A. F.M., of the State Fireman’s Association and is a volunteer fireman with the city. He is married to the former Janie B. Wilson and they have two children: Debbie, who will en ter 10th grade at Newberry High; and Timmy, who is a 3rd grade student at Boundary street school. This is Mr. Partain’s first venture in politics, and he says he “Would like a chance to use some good common sense in. city government and to con tribute something to the best of my ability to promote the welfare of the people of New berry. This is a good town and good people,” Mr. Partain said “and I’d like to contribute to the continued sound growth of Newberry.” Mrs. Sligh, 81, succumbs Mrs, Mamie Hill Sligh, 81, of Greenwood, widow of F. C. Sligh, died Friday after an extended illness. A native of this county, she was a daughter of the late Ta bor H. and Sally Holstein Hill. She had lived in Greenwood since 1918 and was one of the oldest members of Immanuel Lutheran church. Surviving are a son, Frank C. Sligh Jr. of the home; a brother, Julian H. Hill, Green wood. Funeral services were held Saturday at Harley Funeral Home by Rev. Frank L. Roof. Burial was in Greenwood Mem orial Gardens. County native died Friday Mrs. Marie Kohn Barnes, 71 widow of Thomas E. Barnes of Northumberland, Penn, died Friday at the Jacobs Nursing Home after a year’s illness. A native of Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Sidney J. and Mary. Fulmer Kohn and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church in N orthumberland. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Mateson, of Northumberland; three sons, Thomas Kohn Barnes of Con way, Carrol Eric Barnes of Elon College, N. C. and* Jack Kellers Barnes of New York city; a sister, Mrs. DuPont Young of Lake City. Funeral services were held Sunday from her church by Rev. E. Bryan Keisler. Burial was in Rosemont cemetery. Friday service (or Chesley Bedenbaugh Chesley W. (Chess) Beden baugh, prominent citizen of the O’Neal section of the county died Thursday morning at the Columbia hospital after several weeks illness. Mr. Bedenbaugh was born and reared in this county and was the son of the late David M. and Ellen Warner Beden baugh. He was a member of Zion Methodist church, former member of the official board and a former member of the Board of Stewards. He was active in all civic and commun ity organizations. Mr. Beden baugh operated his farm in the O’Neal section of the county, near Prosperity. Mr. Bedenbaugh is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maude Har mon Bedenbaugh, Prosperity; one son, Hubert M. Bedenbaugh of Prosperity; three daughters, Mrs. Paul Nichols, Saluda; Mrs. Hoyt Hendrix, Newberry; Mrs. J. C. Hipp, Loris; two brothers, Dudley L. Bedenbaugh and Dhent A. Bedenbaugh, both of Prosperity; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Boozer and Mrs. R. B. Bowers, both of Prosperity. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock from Zion Methodist church, Rev. Raymond Brock conduct ing the service. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Morse, 82, rites Friday Mrs. Mayebelle P. Morse, 82, died Thursday at a Columbia hospital after a lingering ill ness. Mrs. Morse was born in this county, the daughter of the late McDuffie and Susie Tomb- lin Player. She was a member of Lewis Methodist church. She is survived by two sis ters, Mrs. Mellie Langford of Newberry and Mrs. Addie John son of W. Columbia. Funeral services were held Friday at her church by Rev. Joseph W. Alley. Interment was in Baxter Memorial cem etery. Active pallbearers were Jas. M. Langford, Cecil Langford, Merrell Grant, Derrell Grant H L. Evans and Warren Tram- meell. Sgt. Pitts dies in Germany M-Sgt. L. C. Pitts of New berry and Florida died sud denly Friday afternoon at Waldorf, Germany. He was stationed at Rhein- Maine, Germany, AFB. He was the husband of the former Miss Barbara Felker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Felker of Newberry. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Bob and Walter; his mother, Mrs. Win ifred Pitts of Edge water, Fla.; and one sister, Mrs. Eddie Cromer of Newberry.
