Driving tips given by SCHD Motor vehicles moving slow er than the normal speed of traffic should always use the right-hand lane on highways with four or more lanes so as not to interfere with the flow of traffic, the State Highway Department advised. Although many of the states multi-laned highways are post ed with “Slow Traffic Keep Right” signs, the regulation is being ignored by a large per centage of drivers. Slow traffic should always keep to the right except when preparing to make a left turn officials pointed out, and all traffic should always maintain a speed at or above the posted minimum speed unless it is unsafe to do so. Minimum speeds in South Carolina are 35 to 40 miles per hour, as posted, and depending upon the terrain upon which the high way is located. The use of the left-hand, or faster, lane by slow moving traffic tends to cause traffic congestion, reduce the carrying capacity of the highways and produce situations which might result in accidents when fast er vehicles attempt to weave in and out among slower traf fic. Department officials also re minded motorists that South Carolina now has an absolute maximum speed limit law, and posted maximum speeds must not he exceeded even under the most ideal conditions. Under the absolute limit law, any speed in excess of the posted maximum is a violation.
