Miss Whitaker was graduated from Newberry High School in 1964, and is a junior at Newberry College. Mr. Whitesides is a graduate of Orangeburg High School. He will receive the B.S. degree in Business Ad ministration from Newberry College in May. The wedding is planned for June ninth in Central Methodist Church. Friends and relatives of the couple are invited to attend the ceremony. Kiwanis Club scholarship is offered The Newberry Kiwanis club has announced nlans for the 8th annual award of a very desirable scholarship to be placed at Newberry College for the academic year 1967-68. Value of the scholarship will be $500 for use during the freshman year. Through the Kiwanis Club’s special committee on scholar ship, the chairman, Dr. P. H. Senn, has reported that forms have been sent to high school principals and will be available to residents of Newberry coun ty wbo are in the top quarter of their graduating class. Application forms for the Kiwanis scholarship may be obtained through the office of the Newberry, Mid-Carolina and Whitmire high schools. C ompleted applications should be sent to Dean Conrad Park for the Kiwanis Schol arship Committee, Newberry College. The deadline is April 15th. Applicants will be carefully screened on basis of complete information which they must submit. Applicants will be rated on basis of scholarship, academic achievements, life purpose, per sonality and need. Final decision as to winner will be made after (dose study of applications and personal in terviews with those rating the highest on academic standards. School make up day will be March 23 All public schools will be op en on Thursday, March 23, to make up the day that was lost due to snow. The teacher in- service training which had been scheduled for March 23, will be held on June 1. Schools will be closed on March 24, and 27 for Easter holidays. Heller promoted to Airman 1st KADENA, Okinawa — Carr oll L. Heller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sim Heller, Rt. 1, Pom- aria has been promoted to air man first class in the U. S. Air Force. Airman Heller is a plumbing specialist at this base. He is a member of the Pacific Air Forces which pro vides air power to maintain the U. S. Defense posture in the Pacific and conducts air operations in Southeast Asia. The Airman is a graduate of Gallman High school in New berry. Dr. Mitchell be ladies night speaker An international speaker will headline the Newberry Rotary Club Ladies Night program on Friday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Hall. The club has been fortunate in securing Dr. Carveth P. Mitchell, who was born in Cornwell, England. The Rev. Dr. Mitchell is at present pas tor of St. Mark’s Lutheran church, Charlotte, N. C. Dr. Mitchell has spoken in many countries throughout the w'orld—on the European con tinent, in Germany, France, England, Austria, Holland, in the Far East and many other places. He is an excellent speaker and is quite a humorist in his presentations. Appnoximately 160 Rotar- ians, their wives, and guests will be in attendance at this annual event. Members of the program committee include Dr. E. M. Anderson, chairman; Phil Kelly, Dr. C. A. Dufford and Emerson Jones. L. E. “Bill” Gatlin is presi dent of the local Rotary Club Two members of the Newberry College Singers will present a short musical interlude dur ing the evening. These two stu dents are James Clark, of Lancaster and James Ingram, of Lexington. Dr. Neil Truesdell will give Lenten services at Bachman Chapel The public is invited to Len ten services at Bachman Cha pel Lutheran church Sunday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. Dickie Albert, member of Reformation Lutheran church in Columbia, and senior at Newberry Col lege, will asist Rev. William H. Link in the service. Scouters receive merit badges Troop 66 Scouts were award ed merit badges at the Board of Review' on February 28.
