KIRKLAND Harvey Kirkland, head football coach and athletic director at Newberry College, has / twice received the South Carolina “Coach of the Year” award. He won the title in 1953 on the strength of a 7-2 record, and repeated the honor in 1962 when Newberry’s 6-5 rec ord was called the “winningest” in the state Coach Kirkland received a B.S. degree from Newberry College in 1937. While in College he was considered an outstanding football and baseball player. He returned to his alma mater in 1952 as coach after a suc cessful coaching career at Summerville. t.
