mm / Dept, urges extra care for holidays In an effort to lower the death rate on the hig-hways, of ficials of the State Highway Department are asking motor ists to use extra caution dur ing the dangerous Christmas holiday period which is drawing near. During the holidays the High way patrol will be trying to keep people from getting killed or injured in traffic accidents. Arrests is not our goal; it is safety, officials pointed out. In, reminding the public that all available patrolmen will be cruising the state’s highways, spokesmen brought out that the Highway Department receives none of the fines that are col lected as a result of arrests. Kinard named to safety post C. L. Kinard of Senn Truck ing Company, Newbeny, was elected chairman of the South Carolina Council of Safety Sup ervisors for 1966. The Safety Council concerns itself with safety of truck trav el and among other things, holds road checks and reports defects to owners, writes road patrol reports on moving equip ment, advising owners the man ner in which trucks are oper ated; sponsors the Truck Driv er of the Month and Driver of The Year contests, truck safe ty contest, reports traffic vio lations to truck owners. For the past two years, the Coun cil has won national recogni tion for its safety activities. The South Carolina Council of Safety Supervisors is the Safety Arm of the Motor Trans portation Association of South Carolina. Hi Trim Tree Trimming the tree is fun, but there are some rules that should be followed. First, in spect carefully for frayed cords, exposed wires, and bro ken ^ sockets. Check bulbs in dividually. Begin by placing lights at the top and working down and around, placing lights on boughs nearest the trunk and working outward to tips of branches. A—PAGE 7 Neither does the individual pa trolman have a quota of ar rests ,nor does it mean a thing to him financially if he makes one arrest or a hundred during the month. Several violations are much more common during the holi day periods, and patrolmen have been instructed to keep a sharp eye out for driving under the influence of intoxicants, speeding, improper passing, failure to yield right-of-way, and any other hazardous form of driving. The Department is asking the cooperation and understanding of the public to make safety pay off. lips FARM TALK .... FORBIDDEN TREE One version of how the Christ mas tree came indoors may stem from the days of medieval Ger man drama. In their plays, the Germans used decked-out fir trees as the “tree of Paradise,” repre senting the Garden of Eden. When authorities frowned on pub lic displays of this sort, the trees were used in homes, and a cus tom gradually evolved of decorat ing it at Christmas time with cookies, fruit and, eventually, candles.
