The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, December 23, 1965 SEC. A—PAGE 11 Carolers sing out Christmas greetings at the home of Prof. Charles Pruitt on Clarkson Avenue. The Carolers are illuminated at night, and soft blue lights inside the home form an interesting background for this holiday scene in a woodland setting. In a picture window on the side of the home is a silver Christmas tree, decorated with shiny blue balls. This is among the hundreds of beautifully decorated homes in and around the city. (Sunphoto.) Precious Gifts Of Perfume & Gold Based On Biblical Lore BILL'S GLASS SHOP BILL GRAHAM 1229 Main Street Phone 276-1332 WE WISH YOU THE SEASON’S JOYS! CLAMP'S 1402 Mam Street I The Bible relates that the first gifts the Christ Child received from the Three Wise Men were gold, fran kincense and myrrh. That is the way the story is related in the Book of Matthew. To the modern world there is no mystery about the val ue of a gift of gold. Yet in ancient times, this precious metal was only possessed by kings and very rich men. Thus, the gift was espe cially precious — one fit a King. The other gifts were rare and precious as well. How ever in today’s world, little is known of these sub stances even though they are still in use.' Since St. Matthew says that the Three Wise Men were from the east, it is as sumed that the gold they brought with them for the infant Jesus came from the mines of Indian Mysore. Frankincense,or olibanum, is a resin obtained from the bark of trees which grow on bare rock in the mountains of southern Asia and north east Africa. Once upon a time it was used as a medi cine. Today it is principally used as incense in Catholic churches, Indian and Chi nese temples. Myrrh is a gum resin also obtained from the bark of trees which grow in Africa and Arabia. Since early times it has been used as a base for perfume and in cense — and is still so used commercially today. Thus it is the same today as it was in Biblical times when gifts of gold or per fume are made to loved ones. The gold perhaps isn’t as precious nor as rare as it was when the Three Wise Men travelled to Bethlehem, but the idea behind the gift of gold, as well as perfume based with frankincense or myrrh, is the same. /'• : sparkling good wishes!
