COMMENTS
By Gail Phillips and Barry Shealy
“Only one more day until
Christmas holidays!” .This has
been the cry of the students of
Newberry High School today.
Two whole weeks of sleeping and
eating and having fun—or will
the holidays be spent studying for
examinations and practicing for
All-State Band auditions, as ex
aminations begin on January 14
and All-State try-outs are to be
held on January 18.
On Friday, December 11, a por
trait of Mr. A. W. Murray was
presented to the student body of
Newberry High school by the Key
Club during the chapel program.
Steve Price, president of the Key
Club, presented the portrait to
Mr. Kneece, who accepted it on
behalf of the students and fac
ulty.
Last Friday night, the basket

The NHS Band presented their
Christmas program on Monday
night, December 14, in the High
school auditorium. The program
was centered around a living room
scene where a group of teenagers
were repairing toys for the under
privileged children. Gail Phillips
and Barry Shealy sang two duets
and solos were sung by Jan
Moose, Kenny Hewitt, and Tommy
Hamrick in “Nuttin’ for Christ
mas.” Accompanying the singing
group at the piano were Willy
Gillfillan, Katherine McCullough,
and Barry Shealy. The Nativity
was enacted during scene II. Steve
Rowe sang the solo to “We Three
Kings” during this scene.
On Wednesday, December 16,
the mixed Chorus presented a pro
gram of sacred Christmas music
in the First Baptist Church of
Newberry. The chorus was accom
panied by Carol Armfield and
Judy Farb at the piano, and Barry
Shealy at the organ. Solos were
presented by Sue Brock, Gail
Phillips, Judy Willingham, Wayne
Folk, and Brantley Price. The
chorus also presented a program
of sacred music in chapel Friday.
Since the holidays are coming
up and there will be no activity
at Newberry High school during
this time, our column will not ap
pear in The Sun again until Jan
uary.
This Christmas, if you cannot
give a gift to someone, try giving
a smile!
