By EARL WILSON Quite often we read in our newspapers of some new nu clear explosion and our minds are reminded of the devastita- tion that can come fro ma single bomb. We hear much about ’’hot-line” telephones and the finger that is responsible for pulling the trigger. Such words as radio-activity, radiation, and fall-out have become household words of todays world, but there is still a more devastating type of fall-out in our world today than that caused by nuclear explosion. It is the “fall-out” that is taking place in our churches. More and more our nation is becoming paganized simply because there are so many church members who never dark en the door of the church. It isn’t that they are against the church, but they are not completely for it. They are always willing to allow other activities to come first. They have replaced God in their hearts with golf tournaments, fishing expeditions, and boating on the lake. Fall-out that is caused by a lack of concern is far more dangerous and long-lasting than that caused by an atomic bomb. Nuclear fall-out is destroying, and I pray we will never experience it again; but it will never do the damage that spiritual fall-out will do. Once the cities of Hiroshimi and Nagasaki had recovered from the death-dealing blow of an atomic bomb; and once they felt safe in their streets again, they had the awesome task of restoring normal living conditions. Instead of standing firm for Christ most Christians take an identical stand to that taken by Pontius Pilate, who said, “I find no fault with this man.” He found no fault in him, but he let the crowd crucify him. The Bible says, “He that is not with me is against me; and.he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” Are you listening? His influence on French opera started to decline only with the decisive turn towards modem music and his works still are favorites on stages throughout the world . . . “Herodiade” retells the Biblical story of Salome, whose passion for the saintly prophet John the Baptist led to his beheading . . . Massenet’s opera is less grue- somely morbid than Richard Strauss’ more famous opera on the same subject, but it is warmly sensuous in feeling with a luxuri ant oriental melodiousness that made it a favorite for decades in the United States. When Herodiade was first per formed at Lyon, its success was augmented by a scandal—the Cardinal of that city decreed excommunication against Masse net and his librettist with the result that ticket sales soared . . . Now, in Angel’s “Highlights from Herodiade,” Regine Crespin, who has performed excerpts from numerous operas on Angel pre viously, is heard as Salome, with Rita Gorr as her stepmother, Herodias; Albert Lanee as John the Baptist; Michael Dens as Herod and Jacques Mars as the astrologer Phanuel. BY HELEN HALE Luncheon Delights To boiled asparagus spears, add melted butter mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley. For molded or tossed tuna fish salad, use this dressing: 8 ounces of soured cream, 2 ounces of roquefort cheese, garlic salt, onion salt and dry mustard. Lemon Angel Custard Cake is marvelously refreshing served with an orange-flavored powdered sugar icing. Garnish with sec tions of mandarin oranges, drained from the can. Make baking powder biscuit dough, and shape into strips. Brush with butter, sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake. Place a spoonful of very firm vanilla ice cream on each pan cake and roll. Serve with butter scotch sauce. Fill peach halves with canned luncheon meat. Top with catsup and mustard and broil. It is recorded that when Jesus came from Bethany on the day of his Triumphal Entry into Je rusalem, he sent two of his disci ples to go to a place where two ways met and to loose the colt which they would find there and bring him to Jesus that the hum ble beast might be a mount for the Christ as he rode into the city of his fathers. And the multitude that fol lowed with him and they who went before broke branches from trees along the way and spread them in the way, and correctly identifying the occasion with a passage of the Psalms, they cried: “Hosanna, blessed is he that cometh in name of the Lord!” And the whole city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” Several lessons are to be drawn from the record of the Triumphal Entry. It may lead us to think of and contrast Sunday religion and week-day religion. When you sit in a cushioned pew, where the light softly filters through rich stained-glass windows the anthem is good, the congregational sing ing is uplifting and the pastor’s sermon inspiring, it may seem easy to be religious, but when the trials of the every-day come religion may be another matter. So some of those who hailed Jesus with glad acclaim on Palm Sun day may have followed him afar off on Good Friday. And so it may be in other ways.
