In recent years, however, something pretty close to a gift certificate has achieved popularity on the business front. This innovation has been brought about by the selective gift company—a holiday gift buy ing service for business and in dustry. Most of them operate in the same manner. The gift buyer sim ply decides how many presenta tions he wants in each price range and the selective gift company does the rest—purchasing, gift wrapping, and mailing. The innovation is a selective gift presentation. It is a personal ized booklet that illustrates a dozen or more gift selections ac companied by a selection card. The giver sends the booklet; the re cipient sends the appropriate card to the gift service to receive the gift of his choice. SOUTHERN PLANT The poinsettia which has to be so carefully potted and pro tected in colder climates, will thrive in moist, shady areas of the southern United States, Mexico and parts of South America. Red is the most com mon color, but there are white, pink, and yellow varieties. * '• i ■ ; >:» im. •s. :5t V-wV a,^ SURROUNDED ... This lad is surrounded by a typical se lection of battery-operated toys. More than ever this year, the prosaic flashlight battery will bring animation to toyland. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1963 Preferences in gift wrapping ~ vary as greatly as tastes in face, and clothing across the nation A survey conducted by a wrapping firm showed that t!:c normally conservative Nev' England states stick to tradi tional reds and greens in their choice of Christmas gift wrap pings. The same is true of the Southeast and the midwest. In the Southwest and on the West Coast, however, gift wrap - pers were more daring last year. Reds and greens still led in sales, yet highly popular were blue foil papers and gift wrap pers in pink and cerise. Metallic foil papers were also popular in the Southwest and West Coast, particularly Texas and California. Color Keynotes Decorations A' A look through the merchan dise mart suggests Christmas this year will be traditional with lots of green, gold and bright berry red. Holly wreaths and small dec orative trees are shiny green trimmed with velvet bows, gar lands of della robbia fruits, bright red cherries, strawberries and “just-for-fun” polka dot mush rooms. Tinsel string, fluffy foil fringe and gold paper garlands offer trimming possibilities artful; y festive and fascinating. Small mirrors on an invisible nylon thread, or multi-faceted glittering ornaments reflect a thousand danc ing lights in a holiday room. Oversize ornaments, much too big for the tree hang in clusters and carry Christmas into every corner of the house. Some re semble frosty decorated icicles; others use velvet, jewels and glit ter for fancy festive baubles. No cranberry strings or pop corn strings in the stores — but there’s more than a hint this will be an old-fashioned Christmas. Candles Are Associated With Superstitions Candles today are purely dec orative—atop the birthday cake, on the festive family table, and in the churches. Man’s source of light is electricity. While traditionally associated with religious worship, candles are also the source of some supersti tions. A blue flame, for instance, was once believed to signify there was a ghost in the house. A spark from a candle was supposed to indicate that the person sitting icarest the candle would soon re ceive an important letter. \/V/ vx-i-xw:-. >.*jl *:• • 'sm \ SIN ■i?-” wm ■m vs, ■O'*}** s ^ s M V: V: m mm. p '0M mm. wM ; 1 -am irnmm mk v 1 ^ & v •V ^GREETINGS We join with Santa in wishing to mm our many wonderful friends a day filled with all the gladness of this Happy Holiday!
