Hollywood Boulevard becomes Santa Claus Lane mce a year as Santa Claus and his screen colony cohorts ride down the movie capital’s main street in Santa’s sleigh. Some 500,000 spec tators annually view the parade. SES A POPPIN’ GOOD TIME Children often get ready for Santa long before time for the old gentleman to arrive—and parents are faced with the dif ficult task of planning some type of indoor entertainment for bored youngsters. Most any child will be de lighted to hear someone say, '‘It’s corn popping timer Popcorn has become such a popular snack that producing stales have doubled production in recent years and in many homes the holiday scene is not complete until someone gets out the corn popper. A corn popper isn't neces sary, however, as corn may be popped in a broiler or any old pot or pan if one follows the directions on the jar of corn vjhich may be purchased at the neighborhood grocery. Although popcorn venders prefer large kernels for their machines, smaller kernels are best for home popping. When Chances are the tree you enjoy during the holidays has for sev eral years received careful at tention from a tree farmer. Growing Christmas trees re quire almost as much care as tobacco, cotton, or any other commercial crop—and Christ mas trees are grown with the idea of producing a compact, well-shaped tree about seven or eight years old. Christmas tree customers have established such high standards that great stress is put on the quality of the tree, whether it be Fraser fir, Doug las fir, red cedar, Scotch pine, Arizona cypress, white pine or other popular varieties. Commercial growers of the Fraser fir, for instance, start cutting back the side and top branches when the tree is about two or three feet high. Each year, in dormant months, the tree is sheared. The average grower plants 2,700 trees to the acre. Each year he mows around them for weed control and he maintains fire lanes. He examines each tree once a year and each tree is sheared annually the third through the sixth years. The big job—harvesting— comes the seventh year. Trees are carefully cut and trans ported immediately to market, where they will soon delight boys and girls of all ages. Bethlehem Celebrates Three Christmases Bethlehem celebrates three Christmases each year. The western church observes December 25. The Greek Ortho dox Church celebrates Christmas according to the Gregorian calen dar, Jan. 7, and the Armenians on Jan. 19. Annually, pilgrims worship in the grotto where Christ was bom and laid in the manger. Tower ing over the grotto fa the Ba silica of the Nativity, built in its present form by the Emperor Justinian, in the sixth century. After centuries of religious controversy, the Greek Orthodox Church and the Armenians share the Basilica. Roman Catholics celebrate Mass in their own church adjoining. But aU three share the grotto—the holiest spot in Christendom, Choose loppy" Toys—from a rubber ball to a shiny new bicycle—are a part of growing up and the child without a toy or two—or two dozen—at Christmas is a for lorn tot indeed. Most youngsters will open figuring how much you’ll need, allow one ounce of corn for each quart of popped com. Popcorn may be served in many ways. For children, you may use toothpicks to make a clown or a snowman. For adults, try seasoning with garlic or onion salt, chili or curry powder, or grated cheese. 12- DAY At one time the English cele brated the Twelve Days of Christ mas with playful sports—jump ing in sacks, bobbing for apples, drinking great quantities of hot cider. Today, all that remains of the twelve-day observance, perhaps, is the superstition that all decora tions should be removed by Twelfth Night to prevent bad luck in the coming New Year. Carol singing is a favorite cus tom in Britain and at the mid night services they are sung to herald the birth of Christ. In the same manner as Ameri can youngsters, British children hang their stockings from the mantles or on the ends of their beds on Christmas Eve. They also write to Father Christmas (the British Santa) to inform him of their Christmas wishes. AIN’T NO SANTA . . . Ap parently this young lad be lieves that the real Santa is off somewhere else and from the expression on the young ster’s face, he intends to be off somewhere else, too. SHINY HOUDAY Painting used to be consid ered a fair-weather job—before the advent or odorless, quick drying paints which are now available in hundreds of colors. Repainting living and dining rooms is so easy today that many folks plan a new decor for the Christmas holidays. Easy-to-use latex paints, which don’t show lap marks, help turn the novice painter into an expert. Also available are such handy aids as mask ing tape, disposable mixing buckets, liquids which degloss old shiny surfaces, guards or small rollers that keep paint off adjacent surfaces, and in expensive plastic drop cloths to protect floors and furniture.
