(Photo by Nichols) Music Club Has Christmas Meet The December meeting of the Newberry Music Club was held at the home of Mrs. Aubrey Harley with Mrs. Warren Cousins, Miss Mary Elizabeth Fowler, Miss Viv ian Ellis and Miss Elizabeth Ann Ruff associate hostesses. Mrs. Pinckney* Abrams, presi dent, called the meeting to order after which the National Federa tion of Music Clubs Collect Avas read in unison. Mrs. J. D. French presented the hymn of the month, “Of The Fa ther’s Love Begotten” and the club joined in singing this hymn. J. D. French read the minutes of the November meeting and called the roll. Mrs. Abrams presided over the business meeting. The club was reminded of various concerts on TV which would interest music lovers. Some of the programs mentioned were to be presented by Ford Motor Co. (CBS) Thurs day,. Dec. 14, and Feb. 6. Concerts will be presented by Shell Oil Co. January 18, March 28 and April 13. The Charleston Symphony will audition musicians on June 9 and the audition will be open to inter ested persons from 14 years to 25 years. Mrs. Harley presented the fol lowing interesting program on Christmas Music: “Sweet Little Jesus Boy” (Mac Gimsey), a white spiritual from the Bayous of Louisiana. “A Legend” (Tchaikowsky), a Russian Folk Tune used at Christ mas and Easter. Mrs. Warren Cousins, soloist, Miss Mary Eliza beth Fowler, accompanist. “We Three Kings of Orient Are”, an American carol. Rev. John Henry Hopkins Jr., compos ed the words and music in 1857. God Rest You Merry, Gentle men”, an English carol. Trio: Mr. J. D. French, Mr. George Olsen and Mrs. P. K. Harmon. “Mary Had A Baby”, a South Carolina spiritual. “I wonder as I Wander”, a Christmas song from the Appala chians. Merry Christmas, Little Friend” (Rogers and Hammer- stein). Mrs. Hart Jordan, soloist; Miss Carolyn Feis, accompanist. Bring A Torch, Jeanette Isa bella”, a French carol. “The Twelve Days of Christ mas”. Quartet, Mrs. Warren Cous ins, Mrs. William Hentz, Miss Carolyn Feis and Miss Julia Kib- ler; Mrs. P. K. Harmon, accom panist. What Child Is This?”, written by William Dix in 1800’s. Lullaby, Thou Little Tiny Child” (Coventry carol). Mrs. William Hentz, soloist; Mrs. P. K. Harmon, accompanist. “Go Tell It On A Mountain”, an Appalachian spiritual. “Rise Up, Shepherd and Foller’\ a Negro spiritual, taught the club by Miss Rose Hamm. Mrs. Harley presented the above program in a unique man ner which the members enjoyed. The program was concluded with the singing of familiar car ols led by Miss Mary Elizabeth Fowler. COUNTS Miss Brenda Deloris Shealy was married to Harrison Smith Sum mer December 24 at 4 p.m. at Summer Memorial Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kenneth Hewitt officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Quinnie Lester Shealy of 1317 Silas St., and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Leland Summer Jr. of 1902 Harper St. A cousin of the bride, Ray Berry of Fort Valley, Ga., sang for the service; Mrs. Kenneth Hewitt also sang; and Darr Wise presented organ music. Ushers included Gerald Leland Summer of Charleston, the groom’s twin brother; Wyman Shealy of Beaufort, the bride’s brother; Wade Shealy of Talla hassee, Fla., another cousin, and Ed Johnson of Mullins. Miss Glenda Wise of Newberry and Columbia served as maid of honor, and Miss Gail Livingston as junior bridesmaid. They wore emerald wool jersey sheath dresses with matching velvet headdresses, and carried crescent arrangements of pointettias — Miss Wise’s in red and Miss Liv ingston’s in white. Giv'i’i in marriage by her father, the bride was wearing an Imported beige cashmere sheath dress with matching jacket, whim- sey and gloves. Her Bible, a gift of the groom, was covered with orchids. The couple, along with their parents and attendants, greeted guests in the church vestibule. Foj a trip to Atlanta Mrs. Sum mer wore her wedding outfit, add ing a fur stole and hat. Begin- ing Feb. 1 she and her husband will live in Americus, Ga. Mr. Summer is an alumnus of The Citadel and a graduate of Newberry High School and New berry College. Formerly a furni tures sales representative, he is a field representative for Joanna Western Shade Cloth Co. with headquarters in Atlanta. Mrs. Summer taught school in Chatham County, Ga., before her marriage. Beginning Feb. 1. she will be teaching in Americus. Richardson of Newberry, passed away Wed nesday, January 3 in San Diego, California. She was the daughter of the late James Furman and Annie Cox Richardson, of Simpsonville. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Sally, four broth ers, L. A. Richardson, of Newber ry; J. P. Richardson of Charlotte; Robert C. Richardson, of Green ville; Graves Richardson of Simp sonville and one sister, Mrs. Fred Nantz of Duluth, Ga. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 6 in San Diego Mr. Richardson of Newberry at tended the services, which were held at Benvough Presbyterian church and burial was at Cypress Dew Mausoleum. Mrs. Hawkins is the former Miss Audrey Lane Eargle. Native Of Chappells Dies Mrs. Fannie Foshee, 87, widow of John D. Foshee, died Thurs day at the home of her son, J. F. Foshee, at Ninety Six after a long illness. She was a daughter of the late Jim and Alice Gibson Davis. She had lived in Chappells until three years ago when she went to live with her son. She was a member of Cross Roads Baptist church. Funeral sendees were conduct ed Friday at Cross Roads Baptist church by Rev. J. C. Sorrow, Rev. G. R. Pettigrew. Taylor Smith Dies At Age 91 Taylor Eugene Smith, 91, of Route one, Newberry died late Sunday night at the county hos pital. He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for the past several weeks. Mr. Smith was born in Newber ry county and reared in the Mt. Pleasant section. He spent most of his life in Newberry where he was employed by the Newberry Mills for more than 35 years. He had been retired for the past 20 years. He was a member of the O’Neal Methodist church. He was married to the former Mary Lou ise Girk, who died in 1957. He is survived by two sons, Ro land and James Smith, both of Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Mayonie Padgett and Mrs. Floiee Marlowe, both of Newberry, and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conduct ed at 3:30 p. m. Tutsday at Mc- Swain Funeral home by Rev. Paul Petty. Interment was in Rose- mont cemetery. Active pallbearers were Pete Livingston, John W. Padgett, John Marlowe, William Merritt, Floyd Smith and Bernard West. Mrs. Eubanks Dies In Laurens Mrs. Jesse Louise Epting John son Eubanks, 65, died Wednesday at the Laurens County Hospital. She was born and reared in Newberry County and was the daughter of the late George Mar ion Boyd Epting and Susan Schumpert Epting. Mrs. Eubanks was twice married, first to George Johnson, who died a number of years ago and second to Rusell Eubanks of Joanna. For a number of years, she had made her home at 196 Calhoun Street in Joanna. Mrs. Eubanks is sui vived by her husband, Russell Eubanks, Joan na; one daughter, Mrs. Arron (Dorothy) Fulmer, Kinards; one brother, Ben Epting, Whnnsboro; one sister, Mrs. J. Marvin Bryan, Decatur, Ga., and two grandchil dren. Funeral services were held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. from Mc- Swain Funeral Home with Rev. J. R. McAllister conducting the service.
