Forty were inattendance and all had a de’ightful time. Mrs. James C. Kinard .acting secretary, gave the minutes of the last meeting. A minimum of business was trans acted because of this being large ly a social meeting; however Mrs. Richard L. Baker, chairman ofj the City Beautification Committee; of the League reported for a meeting of her committee as fol lows: “The Civic League's Beautifi-| cation Committee, which met last week suggests that Newberry have a master plan for beautification and the president was asked t o communicate with Clemson col lege to see if we can get help in drawing up and mapping this master plan. “The committee suggests that w r here possible that property own-j ers do not beautify the street is lands, but that street-side beauti fication take place on the prop erty owners own land. However, the committee feels, and suggests, that the city officials should plant low-growing shrubs on the islands to replace the trees that they have caused to be removed. For this planting pink and white dogwood, Judas and crepe myrtle are sug- uatiqrt 1 could ;eiii gested, since none of these will grow to cause wire obstruction and the roots, being shallow, will not cause pavements to buckle or stoppage in the water or sewer lines. “This committee plans to offer, early in the fall, these and per-1 naps other suitable plants for cityj wide beautification; flowering i crabs, pink and white dogwoods, sugar and scarlet maples, Judas trees and perhaps, crepe myrtles.”!
