M„ ELEAZER Droughts had hit us hard about the time I was of the age to go to college. As I re call, the year before (1911) had been about like 1954. Barns were empty. And that was bad. For there was our fort. Droughts even cut my shirt- tails off. It happened this way. I had to have the 6 prescribed shirts to come to Clemson. Folks made all my stuff. My sister volunteered to make the shirts. Seeing no sense in those long tails, she cut ’em off, like her shirtwaists, to save cloth. I got to Clemson with them all new. But I soon found they were an abomination. For those short tails wouldn’t stay in. And back then nothing was more embarrassing than for your shirttail to come out. Fortunately, at Clemson then we wore those close fitting blouses that came down tight ly around the hips. That cover ed my shirttails that were al ways out and saved constant em barrassment for me. For there was no course but to wear those shirts. Times were hard, and made harder by drought. My folks, like the rest, were lit erally skinning fleas for their hides. And it was hard for them TRANSFERS OF REALTY Newberry NO. 1 Outside B. B. Leitz, sey,Jr. to Mrs. Vinnie K. Leitzsey Price, 44.82 acres, $5 (1-2 undivided interest in Han nah B. Leitzsey property.) Another batch of shirts was clearly out of the question. Change, change, the constancy of it! Now boys buy shortailed shirts and leave ’em out intentionally.
