Mountain Easter Sunrise worshippers will receive the finest inspiration of the Easter Season as they wind their way up and along the crest of the ; mountain to greet the glorious Easter Dawn at the sixth annual Little Mountain Sunrise Service, according to Rev. Garth L. Hill, whose congregation will participate in the service. The program begins at 6 a.m. Guest speaker for the Service will be the Rev. H. A. Dunlap, pastor of Colony Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mr. Dunlap has endeared himself to many as a Christian pastor and preacher and his message at the Little Moun tain Sunrise service will be one of inspiration and in keeping with the occasion. Participating churches In thS Service are Mt. Tabor Lutheran, Little Mountain; Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Prosperity; and Holy Trinity Lutheran, Little Mountain. Host pastors are the Revs. J. S. Wessinger and Garth L. Hill, who will take part in the program. Special music will be presented by a combined choir, under the di rection of Mrs. L. C. Derrick, with Mrs. Sammy Frick as organ ist. The site of the Littls Mountain Sunrise Service commends itself to Easter Worship. The sun com ing up to the east and Lake Mur ray spread out to the South makes for a worship experience that will be remembered. The Service has become an im portant part of the Easter cele bration for hundreds of people. The general public is cordially in vited to share in this service of worship. The occasion will be on Monday evening, May 16 at 8 p. m. at the Newberry College Dining Hall. Earl H. Gilliam, president of the board, announced that ihe follow- iing committee on arrangements has been appointed: Clifford T. Smith, Rev. Garth Hill, Thomas H. Pope, Robert D. Schumpart, and P. N. Abrams. Mr. Harper is a native of Edgecombe County, North Caro lina. After attending Leggett and Tarboro high schools, he attend ed Davidson College and North Carolina State College, from which he was graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Prior to accepting his present position, Mr, Harper has been connected with the N. C. State Highway and Public Works Com mission; the Raleigh Times, Ra leigh; North Carolina State Col lege. the N. C. Department of Conservation and Development, Fayetteville Development Corpor ation and served as Industrial De velopment Administrator, N. C. Department of Conservation and Development. Mr. Harper was a member of the U. S. Army corps of Engi- eers and served as Public Rela tions officer in Italy during World War II, They have a son, Walter, Jr., aged six, and a daughter, Elisabeth Frances, aged two. Mr. Harper was selected aa di rector of the S. C. State Develop ment Board on August 8, 1959 to succeed R. M. Cooper, retired. _ . L. E. Kibier Hites Monday Mrs. Stella Wicker Kibier, 4'4, died Saturday night at her home at Ballentine alter an illness of two and one-half years. Mrs. Kibier was born and reared in the St. Phillip’s sec tion of Newberry County and was the daughter of Mrs. Vera Lomi- nick Wicker and the late John W. Wicker. For the past 18 years she had made her home in Ballentine. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church of White Rock; a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the U.L.C.W. and Woodmen of the World La dies' Court. Mrs. Kibier is survived by her husband, L. E. Kibier, Ballentine; two eons, William David Kibier and Roland Eugene KIMer, both of Columbia; one daughter, Mrs. Stella Berenico Shoaly, Ballen tine; her mother, Mrs. Vera L. Wicker; one sister, Mies Dorothy Wicker, Pomarla; one brother, No land B. Wicker, Joanna. Two grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 11 a.m. from Bethel Lutheran Church at White Rock with Rev. Guy C. Cruse and Rev. Paul McCullough conducting the service. Burial followed in Bethel Church Cemetery. Is Selected For Scholarship Kay Livingston Davis of New berry was among the 59 young women selected to receive schol arships to Winthrop College for next year. She was the recipient of one v of ihe Alumnae honor scholarships, valued at $200. Oth ers from the county selected for the Alumnae honor Included Claire Smith of Kinards and Bertlce Teague of Whitmire. NEPH Essay Winners Named Miss Brenda Crapps of New berry High School has been an nounced as the county winner of the National Employ the Physi cally Handicapped essay contest. She will receive first price of $15, and $10 for placing first at New berry High School. Second county prise, $10 and $10 for first at Mid- Carolina High went to Miss Caro lyn Connelly. Tommy Stroud took third place, $5 and $10 for first place at Whitmire High. Prises were donated by Newberry Fed eral Savings & Loan Assn., New berry County Bank, J. P. Stevens & Co., and Prosperity Furniture Co. Presentation of awards will be made at an early date. The judges for the contest were from the English Department of Newberry College which is headed by Dr. Frank L. Hoekins. Smith - Crook Wedding Date Is Announced Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Twining Smith of Kinards announce the engagement of their daughter, Sylvia, to Charles Lee Crook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delma Lee Crook of Boone, N. C. The wedding is to take place June 16, on the wed ding anniversary of the bride- elect’e parents, at Bush River Baptist Church. The bride-elect was graduated from Furman Uninversity in 1959 with a B. A. degree in ele mentary education. She was a member of the a capella choir, Kappa Delta Epsilon and a senior superlative. She served as presi dent of the S. C. Student Christ ian Asaociation during her senior year. She teaches at Welcome Ele mentary school in Greenville, The bridegroom-eleqt received a B. A. degree from Furman Uni versity in 1958. He is now a First Lieutenant in the Unitad States Marine Corps Reserve, stationed at New River Air Fading Base, Jacksonville, N. C. - UDC Chapter Hears Griffith Steve Griffith Jv. was guest speaker when Calvin Crosier Chapter of UDC held its April meeting at the home of Mrs. Thompson Price with Mrs. W. D. Beard, Mrs. T. Roy Summer, Sr., Mrs. John Epps, Mrs. J. F. Hawk ins and Mrs. Ruby Trice associate hostesses. His subject was'“South Carolina Claims Hsr Own—Wade Hampton.” Mr. Griffith said that the UDC served a two-fold purpose: it brings to mind our ancestors who fought in the terrible struggle, and it helps educate the youth who know not too much about the Con federacy. He gaVe an interesting account of the life of Wade Hamp ton. During the business session, the chapter voted a donation to the Children’s Chapter to help de fray current expenses. Mrs. Steve Griffith, Sr., re ported that the Memorial Day Service would lie held at the Monu ment on May 10th at 5:80 p.m. Plans are for a small parade with the high school bknd, members of the Children’s ehapterr marching, and songs by Miss Juanita Hitt’s girls chorus. Dr. P. L. Grier will be the speaker.
