Most of the newer arti cles come brightly polished and protected by a coat of lacquer, needing only a light rub with a soft cloth to remove dust and finger marks. However, when articles are fre quently used, such as brass door knobs, the lacquer may wear off. After polishing, it is a simple matter to give the article a new protective coat by spraying lac quer from an aerosol container. To polish, use any commercial metal cleaner recommended for copper. Copper bottom cookware is often used for decorative pur poses—but if the utensils are not to be used in this way the house wife might consider allowing the copper to remain discolored. Once the tarnish covers the surface of the copper it prevents further oxidation and actually protects the metal. If an electric stove is used, the darker color and reduced gloss will improve the efficiency in the use of current by the quicker transmission of heat. FOR AND ABOUT TICNAGCRS Parents Can't Duck Responsibility IT’S YOUR FAULT Wsslm- pARENTAL guidance through the * formative teenage years is high ly important. Quite often, this guidance—or the lack of it—brings distressing consequences. When parents are too stern—or too lax— they are asking for trouble. Unfortunately, some parents think it is a matter for boasting, rather than disciplinary action, when their teenagers accomplish some “adult” task, like driving an automobile. Take the case of the father who joked with his fellow workers about the fact that his 13- year-old son “slipped” home from school in the afternoons and “bor rowed” the family car to take his friends riding. The so thought dad didn’t know what was going on— but dad was the wise one. He was even wiser, it proved, when the Inevitable happened. The youngster was involved in an accident on the highway. Some of his passengers were hurt; none seriously, but scratch ed and bruised just the same. The investigation of the acci dent proved that the other driver was at fault. But also turned up the fact that the lad had no driver’s license—and that his father knfew that he had been driving the fam ily car. The end to the story wag written by an ‘ ‘unsympathetic” judge who held the idea that a father who knew what was going on should have done something about it. The parents of the other teenagers in the car felt the same way. Dad’s joke was no joke, after all. Teenagers are full of fun and full of life. But they need under standing yet firm parental guid ance and for this reason it isn’t fair or smart, to look the other way.
