W HILE some thirty million
Americans of all ages have
found bos ting to be an exciting,
invigorating — sad safe — sport,
thousands of others deny them
selves the pleasure of enjoying
recreation on the water simply
because they are afraid of it
Water is always dangerous, and
It is wise to have a healthy aware
ness of this fact Yet when the
proper safeguards are observed,
boating and other water sports
can be as safe as puttering around
In the backyard.
Most people fetw water for food
reason—they cannot swim. Yet,
barring some physical disability,
there is today little excuse for an
individual not being able to swim.
Few communities do not have reg
ular learn - to - swim programs.
While it is true that these pro
grams are mainly geared to teach
ing youngsters, adult instruction it
offered in most instances.
If you are a non-swimmer,
check first with your local YMCA
and Red Cross chapter. Chances
are, instruction is available to you.
Both of these organizations have
been responsible for teaching thou
sands of youngsters and adults
how to taka cara of themselves in
the water.
Learning to swim usually takes
only a short time. But it opens up
a now area of wonderful outdoor
recreational activity — swimming,
boating, water skiing, skin diving
and fishing. Thousands and thou
sands are taking up one or more of
these sports each year.
It is natural that the inability
to swim brings a psychological
fear of water—but it is a fear
that is simple to overcome through
learning to swim.
Swimming, like bicycle riding or
roller skating, calls for only a lit
tle co-ordination and effort. With
proper instruction, it is usually as
simple as rolling off a log.
Tj'ABRIC or rugs frayed? Dab
* with colorless nail polish to
stiffen the material and keep it
from fraying further.
When your bath towels get worn
edges, sew contrasting bias tape
on them and you can double the
wear of the towels.
If the belts on washable cotton
dresses become limp after a few
launderings, dip them in a perma
nent-type starch that does not
wash out and they'll remain nice
and crisp for the life of the dress.

with needle and thread and slip

Much of the loose dirt on up-
bos tery can be taken off by rub
bing a damp sponge over it. This
is also excellent treatment if you
have a dog or cat which gets its
hair on furniture. This sponge
treatment may also be used on
rugs.
Use masking tape on small sized
rugs to make a room-sized rug
which can be taken apart readily
