PAGE FOUR Crop Contest Deadline Near Deadline Near for Crop Contests July 1st marks the deadline for farmers to enroll in the three state and district crop contests. These are 5 Acre Cotton' Contest, the 3 Acre Corn Contest and the 5 Acre Pasture Contest. We have to have at least 10 farmers parti cipating in the cotton contest in order for Newberry County to be eligible for a county prize. Cotton is now growing well and looks good and we hope there are addi tional farmers who would like to sign up in the cotton contest this year. Only District and State prizes are available in the Corn Contest. However, a suitable award will be made to the farmer who produces the top corn yield without irriga tion. The 5 Acre Pasture Contest is limited to those growing either Coastal or Suwannee Bermuda and there are two divisions in this contest. In the old division a far mer may enter 5 acres that was planted before this year and in the new division he may enter 5 acres, planted this year. However, any one farmer is limited to win ning an aw r ard in only 1 division. A number of farmers set out Coastal Bermuda this year and we hope that those interested will contact our office and sign up by next week. We were fortunate to have two winners in the pasture contest last year. Both William Senn and Clifford Smith received handsome engraved watches for their outstanding results in grow ing Coastal Bermuda. 4-H Dairy Judging Team To Compete At Clemson Newberry County will be rep resented at the State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest to be held at Clemson College this week. The county dairy judging team was se lected several weeks ago and has been practicing several times in preparation for this contest. We have been fortunate in hav ing the assistance of Robert Mc Daniel in our work during the past few months. We regret to report that Robert is being trans ferred to Anderson County effec tive July Ist.We know Robert has made many friends in New berry County who will also regret that he is leaving. However, we are glad that Robert is going to one of the outstanding agricul tural counties of the state and know he will contribute much to the extension program in Ander son County. Replacing Robert' as Assistant County Agent in Newberry will be W. S. Walker who is now Assist ant County Agent in Spartanburg. Walker has already had several years experience in extension work and with this background we feei he will be a big help to us in New berry County. Clubs The thirty-eighth annual con vention of the South Carolina Council of Home Demonstration clubs met at Winthrop College, Rock Hill, last week. Mrs. M. H. Lineberger, president of Catawba, presided. Mrs. T. P. Crooks of Newberry and State Education Department chairman worked with education chairmen from designated coun ties setting up education goals for 1958-59. Mrs. George Abrams, membership chairman from New berry County, worked with the | state membership chairman and other county chairmen setting up state membership goals. Mrs. Harold Bowers, health chairman [ for Newberry County also worked with the health and safety com mittee setting up state goals. Mrs. Edward Chandler and Mrs. W. C. Koon represented Newberry County in the fashion show Wednesday nigbt. They mod eled ensembles which they had made. Other enjoyable events included an informal reception on Tuesday evening, an address by Dr. Fred V. Poag, minister, Shandon Pres byterian Church of Columbia and reports on the national conven tions. Newberry County along with 11 other counties received a blue ribbon for outstanding work ac complished during the past year. They also received a blue ribbon on the publicity scrapbook. Mrs. Henry L. Parr received the rib bons for Newberry’s work. During the business session, in Union Saturday evening. Miss Adams is the granddaughter of the Blacks. Mrs. John Earle Smith of New berry County was appointed State Religion and Family Life Chair man. Six hundred thirty-two attend ed the convention.
