C., Rev. Maxie C. Collins, Director, said today. A total of 536 white male alco holics were included in the study. Tests given included Army Beta, Otis Gamma, Wechsler-Bellevue. Results by groups were: Mental defectives, 18; below average, TO SS, 228; average, 89-109, 251; above average and superior. 39. The average for the group was 89, barely within the average range. In the course of the study, check ups on patients was at tempted. Whi-e it was impossible to locate some of the patients, enough were located and checked to reveal the following: (1) Not one of the mental de fectives remained sober. (2) Not one of those with se vere brain damage remained so ber, regardless of the mental ab ility score. (3) Alcoholics with below av erage intelligence tended to re turn to drinking far more fre quently than alcoholics with av erage or better than average in telligence. (4) Alcoholics, intellectually, are just average people, being neither smarter nor dumber than non alcoholics. (5) The ability of the alcoholic or excessive drinker to think is definitely impaired by alcohol. The minute he stops drinking he be gins to feel worse, but to get bet ter. Boston, Virginia: I remember back in the early Eighties before wire was manufactured for use in fences. My father, we boys and the hired hands on our farm ten miles west of the new Kerr Lake in Mucklen- burg County, Va., cut large trees, split the ten-foot lengths into rails and built rick-rack fences five feet high around large portions of the farm. In these enclosures we kept cat tle, sheep, swine and geese. Sec ond to the production usefulness of the cows were the sheep, often used extensively as lamb and mutton roasts. Also, every May a large number were herded into pens and sheared. We washed the wool and when it was dry, re moved the trash burrs. Much of this wool we carded into 12-in. rolls about finger size. These rolls were then spun into thread on a spinning wheel (which I still own). We then dried it in the de sired colors and my mother and sister would knit socks for the men and knee-length stockings for the women and children. They also wove beautiful bed blankets and cloth from which were made petticoats for the ladies. Of course this could not be done without a warp made the same way as wool thread, but for strength and durability was made of cotton grown on the farm. The seeds were picked out by hand and on cotton picking nights each member of the family was alloted a certain amount to pick before retiring. - The’ cotton thread had to be dyed before use. Harper FATHER S DAY It is to be hoped that the world having learned to observe Mother’s Day, will eventually learn to ob serve Fathers Day the third Sun day in June. Eventually is used because our people seem slow in taking up a belated observance. Honoring Mother is a blessed thing, but it seemed strange to the son of a wonderful father that for so long no recognition was given to Father. A writer went in to a certain home one night and he saw on one wall of the parlor the words, “God bless our home.’’ And on the nearer wall he saw, “What is Hom& Without a Moth er?" These were all right, he wrote, “but what is home without a father?” In nine times out of ten, the writer asserted, the horge was a boarding house. On the whole. Dad might have his faults, he might have lots of them, but, wrote the writer, he was all right, and loved just the same.
