It is known that the College began to play intercollegiate baseball in 1901. After several years of un successful competition, the “Ind ians,” as the team was later clubbed probably by newspaper men, won their first champion- It is our hope that New berry College will have a Happy Centennial Year and will continue to pros- \ ,j per throuh another cen tury. BURNS & SUMMER 1517 Martin Street Newberry, S. C. ship in 1905.', As early as 1911 Newberry Col lege was participating in inter collegiate basketball. Intercollege- iate football was started in 1913- 14, a red-letter year in the ath letics program. The Newberry team won all the football games which they played in South Car olina. The following year the New berry team tied the University of South Carolina in football and won the state championship in basket ball. Two years later the Newberry players decisively defeated the University of South Carolina. 1$ w r as about this time that the New berry teams became known as the “Indians.” There is this possible account of the origin of the name. When the athletics program of the school was still in the embryonic stage, some of the students decided to form an athletics association. They busied themselves at clearing away the pines back of the present site of Carnegie Hall. Their labors reduced the timber to 48 cords of wood which were sold. The cash was used to equip the field and the team. The next step was to find uniforms. Funds were limited and the students visited many sporting goods firjns. They fin ally found a store that had order ed some dazzling red uniforms for a major league team which had failed to meet the payments. The Newberry players bought the un iforms at a low price. Sports writers impressed by the brilliant red began to call the players the “redmen” and thus the “Indians.” After a football slump, Fred D. Mac Lean came to the College on September 1, 1921 and pro duced winning teams. A new athletics field was equip ped during 1922. The Athletics Committee of the Faculty and the Athletics Commission of Newberry County College Club put on a campaign for the sale of season tickets to all athletics contests to be staged for one year. Prof. F. D. MacLean, physical director of the college, was one of the leading men in this program. The new field was completed early in November 1922 at a cost of $3000 and named in honor of Dr. E. B. Setzler for his con tribution to the athletics program of the college. The first contest on Setzler. Field was a football game between Newberry College and the Citadel. Newberry won j by a score of 10 to 7- The foot ball field was later relocated on the corner of College and Ceme tery Streets and wooden bleachers, capable of seating about 2000 persons were erected. In 1955, the wooden bleachers on one side of the field were removed and replaced with a steel stand with a seating capacity of 2000. A new fence was erected around the field and a new score- board and lights furnished to make this a modern, comfortable stadium. Setzler Field will be the scene of the spectacle, “Indian Trails,” expected to be the most outstanding performance ever pre sented in Newberry. Mathematics Department Prof. E. G. Douglas, A.M., is| Professor of Mathematics; Prof. N. K. Williamson, M.S., is asso ciate professor in this department. Many Newberrians and College | alumni will remember the late Prof. W. H -Gaver who served! many years as head of this de partment and died several years agb while still an active professor. •Both the Bachelor of Arts and| Bachelor of Science degrees with a major in mathematics are offer ed students specializing in this j field. Courses offered are College Algebra; Plane Trigonometry; Plane Analytic Geoometry; Dif ferential Calculus; Integral Cal culus; Advanced Integral Calcu lus; Solid Geometry; The Pro gram of Mathematics in the High School; Theory of Equations; Ad vanced Analytic Geometry.
