A good year bad to die so 1956 could be born." We might say this, but no one does. If 1955 was a good year, it will be well remembered, but few will dwell upon its passing. It must give way to a bright new year bringing with it the profound impres- aion that we are again blessed with an invaluable supply of new days, hours and minutes. We have found a new reservoir of time; time in which to make plans, to do things, to live and think, and to make our dreams come true. Time is indeed the true coin of our mqrtal realm, a deeply personal possession that each is free to spend, squander, sell, give away, devote to the glory of God and to the causes of humanity. And though 1956 marks yet another milestone along the journey of life that is all too short and quickly travelled, it is joyfully welcomed mm the giver of a new and magical handful of time. With this magical handful it is possible to defeat the worries of age; to conquer fear; to see through the shadows of disillusionment. M. ELEAZER Last week I told you about cut ting those pines that were bent over with their burdens of ice when I was a kid. With their tops almost touching the ground, and carrying such a load of ice at that awkard angle, their bent tranks were in quite a strain. One lick on the off-side with a sharp axe, and down they crashed with a resounding noise. There was a danger to this that we did not appreciate. Not at first. Ben was our hero. A bit older and sturdier and more ventursome he was always doing daredevil things back in on wild domain. He picked out about an 8-inch pine tree, bigger than most of ’em we thus cut. His axe was given a final whetting with the rock he carried in his pocket. He said he was going to bring that pine down with one lick on ltd off-side. The heavily bowed top must have had a half ton of ice on it. And at that angle, there was a great pressure oh its trunk at the axe level. He cut several small persimon hushes out of his way so his axe could have full sweep. He spat in his hands and rubbed them. Then he took hold of his axe handle and gave it a mighty heave slant ing into that tree trunk about two feet above the ground. Instead of snapping off with a pistol-like report, his % cut had not gone deep enough, and' about a third section plit off and flew up, knocking his hat off his head. Even though we tfere all kids, we saw the extreme danger of that. If that great bent slab of a tree-trunk had hit Ben in the head, it would have been just too bad. The very thought of what might have happened if he had been a few inches closer sobered us. And we quit popping those ice burdened trees during that freeze. Lesson for January 1, 1956: Luke 11: 29-44. Golden Text: Luke 11: 23. Jesus told the people, who sought sign of authority in him, that there would no sign be given them but that of the prophet Jonah, and he rebuked them for their hypocrisy. He then spoke of the single eye In the sight of God. If the eye is single, the whole body is full of light. Thus did Jesus emphasize sincerity that should mark every Christian. The eye must be kept unclouded with prejudice or any thing whatsoever that will mar the perfect vision of life as it is, revealed to men through Christ. Jesus also spoke about the ex ternals of life and the heart with in. The Pharisees attacked Jesus for not washing before eating in one of their houses. Jesus told them they were concerned. to clean the outside of the platter but cared not for the inward pert that was full of ravening and wickedness. Then he pronounced a woe upon them because they were more intent upon Use lesser things than with clean hearts in the sight of God.
