WORDS slip ■n< Mima ‘3* mm m m m a last lain I THOUGHTS RS By LYN CONNELLY S EVERAL weeks back we wrote some words of praise for Betty Aim Grove, talented songstress on “The Big Payoff’’. . . Little did we realize then how valuable an asset she is to the show . . . Re cently she took a vacation and her substitute (we’ll be kind and re frain from naming her although you may well remember) nearly put the show on the skids . . . Be tween a flat voice and a faulty memory (did she sing one song without fluffing???) she would have made anyone sound better by comparision . . . When Betty Ann, who we believe to be the best singer with the best person ality this side of Dinah Shore, re turned, it was indeed wonderful. Looks as though the Benny Good man movie will finally reach the making stage this summer after several years of talking about it . A report has it that 24 to 26 Goodman favorites win be used in the film, including “Stompin’ At the Savoy,” “And the Angels Sing,” “Goodbye” and “Let’s Dance”. . . A driving rendition of the wild, “Sing, Sing, Sing” will wind 'up the film . . . Original Goodman sidemen, Krnpa, Hamp ton, Stack and 23ggy Elman will probably be recruited. PLATTER CHATTER COLUMBIA:—The Mariners, dis owned Godfrey singers, have their best record to date in “Chee Chee OO Chee (Sang the Little Bird),” backed by “A Rusty Old Halo,” new and nniqne . . . Jimmy Ley den directs the Chappaqnb High School Kids in “Marty” backed by “East Side, West Side”. . . Fess Parker (better known as “Davy Crockett”) and Baddy Eb- sen team up with “Old Betsy,” which, of course, is Crockett’s fa mous rifle . . .“Be Sure You're Right, Then Go Ahead,” which Is supposed to have been oT Davy's motto, is on the flip side . . . C. REV. ROBERT H. HARPER Tbt Prophet of Judah's Decline. Lesson for July 3: Jeremiah 22: 1-9 24-25. ' F Golden Text: Jeremiah 22: 13. Jeremiah has been called the “Weeping Prophet,” because of his book of Lamentations and because of the general tenor of his utter ances. It fell to him to tell apos tate kings and wilful people truths they did not want to hear and to demand of them a course they did not want to pursue. His voice be came very unwelcome to rulers and people, and steps were taken to silence him even by threat of death. But Jeremiah demonstrated that not every man who can weep is afraid to die. Not once was he intimidated, not once was he silenced except by force and im prisonment. Denouncing alliances with other nations as a means of defence against mighty Babylon instead of obedience to God and trust in him, Jeremiah incurred the enmity of the rulers and he was accused of being an ally of the enemy. The prophet was a native of a village a few miles north of Jeru salem, and he began his service in the latter part of Josiah’s reign and he continued to labor for al most fifty years. When the rem nant of his people fled into Egypt, Jeremiah was forced to go with them, and the last glimpse we have of him is that of the faithful old prophet denouncing the Wor ship of the Egyptian “queen of heaven,” which his foolish people had taken up. His whole life was a shining example of devotion to God when all the world seemed to be eoing the other way.
