Youmans was the kiostess td the Calvin Crozier chap ter of the U. D. C. on Tuesday af ternoon, January 4th. The asso- ciate hostesses were: Mrs. C. A. Kaufmann, Mrs. Floyd Bradley and Mrs. W. JD. Beard. There were ueventeen members present After the opening ceremonies, Mrs. W. H. Tedford, co-chairman of the historical committee, intro duced Mrs. A. J. Bowers as the upeaker for the afternoon. Mrs. Bowers reviewed for her listeners in an interesting and weli-prepar- od manner the book "Rebel Rose" hy Ishbel Ross. “Rebel Rose"’was Bose O'Neal Greenhow who serv ed the Confederate cause well as u famous spy in the War Between the States. In her aunt’s boarding Rouse in Washington, she became at member of an espionage group and distinguished herself by warn ing the Confederate army of the approach of the enemy before the jFlrst Battle of Manassas. She was m staunch friend of John C. Cal- Stoun. During her imprisonment, she wrote a book and after her release from prison, she went to England to sell it On her return trip, she was drowned. Mrs. Tedford thanked Mrs. Bow- «rs for her splendid review. The president, Mrs. F. Scott El liott, presided over the business uession. She mentioned her recent ■visit to the Confederate Home in Colombia and read a note of thanks for the gifts which the chapter sent to the women there. Dr. Goggans Tells Of European Tour The regular meeting of the Am erican Legion Auxiliary was held on January 6th at the Community Hall with Mrs. Frank Sutton, Miss Virginia Dufford, Mrs. I. M. Sat- terwhite, Sr., Mrs. W- S. Chap man, and Mrs. W. R. Reid, Jr. as hostesses. The president, Mrs. Louis C. Floyd, called the unit to order. The colors were advanced by the Sergeant-at-arms, Mrs. Roy Whit aker. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was given by the unit. After a stanza of the Star Spang led Banner was sung, Mrs. F. Scott Elliott, chaplain, led the unit in prayer. The preamble was recited in unison and at the conclusion, the group stood for a minute in honor of our war dead while taps was softly played. Mrs. P. K. Harmon, music chair man, introduced Miss Alice Car ter, who entertained the unit by singing "The Desert Song” and “This Is My Country”. She was accompanied by Mr. Herlong Yar borough of Newberry College. Mrs. T. P. Crooks, legislation chairman, and Mrs. Albert Mc- Caughrin, National S e c u r it y chairman, were in charge of the program. Mrs. Crooks introduced the guest speaker of the after noon, Dr. Sadie Goggans of Rock Hill. Dr. Goggans gave a most in teresting and informative talk on her tour of Europe last summer. During her talk, she showed slides that were made while in Europe. After singing a stanza of “Am erica the Beautiful”, the flags were retired and the meeting declared adjourned. Delicious refreshments of sand wiches, fruit cake, and coffee were served. C. <n>-4tc Mrs. Hattie Boland Rites Tuesday Mrs. Hattie Sharpe Jones Ro land, 77, died Monday morning at Newberry County Memorial Hos pital after a short illness. Mrs. Roland was born in Lex ington County, daughter of the late Jake and Victoria Hite Sharpe. She had spent most of her life in Newberry County. She was a member of West End Baptist Church. She was twice married, first to the late Herbert Jones and from this union she is survived by one son, H. L. Jones, San Diego. Calif.; her second marriage was to Dan C. Roland, who survives with one daughter, Mrs. H. M. Davis of Newberry. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. H. S. Napier, Columbia, and Mrs. Simp Rush and Mrs. Emma King, Lexington; and one grqad son. £> Funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Whit aker Funeral Home by the Ravi J1 E.
