Dodge Contest Com'peting with 17 other “teen agers” from various South Caro lina cities during a one and one half hour telecast from WCOS-TV in Columbia on Saturday after noon, Johnie Johnson of Whitmire received fourth place in the col lege scholarship contest conduct-, ed by the South Carolina Dodge Dealers Association. Jonnie's dramatic reading from “Mary Stuart” by Schiller won high praise from the judges, Guth rie Darr of Columbia College, Mrs. Phyllis Fleichel of the University of South Carolina, and Stanley Zompakos of Columbia Concerts, Inc. They stated that the compe tition was exceptionally keen and expressed surprise at the high quality of the teen-age talent per forming. Saturday’s competition climaxed a state-wide series of similar events held in 25 South Carolina communities under the sponsor ship of Dodge "dealers. Jonnie won the privilege of representing New berry in a contest held here on November 17 at Smith Motor com pany’s showroom on College street. A tour is planned for the historic car. 4-H Youth Win Awards in South Carolina F OREMOST among 4-H Club members in South Carolina are two teen-agers who have high ratings in the National 4-H Home Improvement and Girls’ Record award programs. Barbara Hawthorne, 17, of Ab beville, turned hfer efforts .toward making the interior of her home more comfortable and attractive in the 4-H Home Improvement program. State honors and an all-expense trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago were awarded to Barbara by the Sears-Roebuck Foundation. Seven years ago her family purchased an estate with a house which was built during stage coach days and allowed to go to ruin. They Wanted to preserve the original house as much as possi ble. Barbara helped put on weath erboarding, and replace the porch, and did much of the outside paint ing. Besides the major repairs of painting and fixing, she scraped off wallpaper, painted walls and floors, and put asbestos insula tion in the roof. She made drapes, and covered a chair and pillows. Her local leader is Mrs. J. R. Hill. • • • • Her all-around outstanding rec ord in home economics has' brought hig*h honor to Gloria Ena bler, 17, of Townville. She has All these programs are conducted under the direction of the Coop erative Extension Service. Barbara Hawthorn# Gloria Embler been named State winner in the 1964 4-H Girls’ Record program, and was presented with a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago by Montgomery Ward. During her nine years in 4-H Club work, she has made 140 gar ments; canned 2,113 quarts and 485 pints of fruits, vegetables and meats; cultivated a garden, and helped tend 1,743 hens. She has won many awards on her achieve ments. She brought top honors to Anderson County in the 1954 Dress Revue.
