ELEAZER Clemsbn Extension Information Specialist OFF AGAIN Along at times of late I’ve brought you irrigation thunder from west of the Rockies. And then I’ve strayed deep down old Mexico way and prowled around at times. I told you of that. Up East too I went, when devastating drought had struck five years ago, before the late one hit us. And I told you of irrigation’s abundance there, amid the wide desolation that vast sweep of dry country that lay all around And here I go again! It is now just east at and ' partly in the Rockies. From the Panhandle of Texas, it’s on through New Mexi co, Arizona, Utah, and on into the rich lands of southern Idaho that irrigation makes fruitful. I sure wish you could go along,* for I like company. But since you can’t. I’ll take you with me in the columns when I get back. And for it all, thanks to Bill Camp for his interest in irrigation for South Carolina. SAUERKRAUT Do you like sauerkraut? I do. We always made it at home, in a barrel, and then canned it up when it got just right. • We had no formula for making it. The family tradition was just handed down. But there are writ ten directions for making it. They are carried in Clemson’s Circular 237, “Brining at Home” that you can get from your home agent. When cabbage are plentiful, that’s a good thing to do with ’em. IRR’lGATION IN BEAUFORT County Agent Johnson of Beau fort tells me that four additional farmers installed irrigation sys tems on their truck farms there this past spring. Irrigation usually pays on any crop, and specially on truck. CALHOUN GRAIN Calhoun is a rather small coun ty. But it does a lot of rather sharp farming. . County Agent Cain tells me they had about 45,000 acres of grain the past season. About 40,- 000 acres of this was sprayed against weeds. And just about all of it Was followed by shatter-re sistant soy beans. They now lend their dark green color to the land scape almost anywhere you look down there Soon those fields of soys will be turning to gold, yes, gold in two ways. First is the golden color of the harvest. Then the money from their sale. And that rich roughage turned under there is in the na ture of gold too. It is deposited there, and you draw it out with the crops that follow. Thus they have two money crops from the same land the same year. You can’t do that at many places in this country. I wonder if we fully appreciate this and other natural advantages we have? We have just in late years started taking advantage of lot of ’em. And when we learn to in a big way, a new glory will come to and from our land. 4-H AND CONSERVATION Just about all phases of con servation are taught and demon strated in 4-H. Assistant County Agent Allen of Greenwood says all of their April 4-H Club meetings were devoted to the conservation and improvement of the soil. Progress on this basic problem is surely being made. The SOS technicians give intensive aid to the farms having a complete soil and water plan. The teachers of agriculture embody conservation in their classes of FFA boys. And the district supervisors put a lot of impetus behind conservation from the very grass roots. From all of these efforts, work ing more or less together, the cause of conservation is getting a better and better play. And.this embraces it all; woodland, water, sod*, and soil. COASTAL BERMUDA All the past spring the 3 county owned tree setters and the SCS sprigging machine were kept busy putting out Coastal Bermuda grass in Hampton county, according to County Agent Thompson. Other counties were busy at that too. Now is the time to see a lot of those plantings. Tours are in order for this. Subscribe to The Newberry Sun "O EMEMBERING the old phrase 1 ^ about “Necessity—the Mother of Invention”—I would like to pass along to the scientific world my personal idea of an item greatly needed to help the male married half of this old world get along a little better in life. Birthdays, anniversaries, ap pointments, community bridge nights and long ago promises to the little woman are things that men often forget, to their sorrow. It doesn’t lead to bloodshed, but creates a strained atmosphere that puzzles the male mind. Many a long-suffering husband has sudden ly faced up to the fact that he’s in the dog house and doesn’t know why — all he did was come home, • take off his shoes and settle down with the evening paper and three library books. 'Getting things back on the righl keel in this situation involves the difficult task of finding out what’s wrong. And, the air really explodes when the poor soul who forgot a wedding anniversary asks, with an innocent air, “What happened?” Much worse, however, is the more immediate situation that oc curs when hubby comes in tired and bedraggled from the office and is greeted with this phrase: “No tice anything different?” It’s a sure-fire cinch she has waxed the floors, rearranged the furniture, given herself a new permanent, bought a new dress, washed the windows or scrubbed the kitchen floor. The problem for hubby is to guess which and for the sake oi immediate peace in the family he has to come up with the $64 an swer before he wipes away the lip stick from the greeting kiss. If he misses, he won’t get another buss or a long time. Sheet Metal Contractor—Heating—Air Conditioning Licensed Gas* Fitters CAROLINA METAL WORKS College Street Extension A. G.
