I FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 1953 THE NEWBERRY SUN PAGE FIVE 1 S INCE the television set can’t be moved, the boys hit upon the idea of bringing their portable ra dio to the dinner table so they won’t miss any of their programs. Un fortunately, I relaxed discipline one night and allowed it. Now I like radio programs, just so they are not off-key sopranos or mountain music. And the experi ment went along fine—up to a point. Of course, when their mother asked for the butter they were so interested they passed the peas. At other times they didn’t respond. And then I became interested. The story was about a man, a little girl and a boy, in a jet plane that had been chasing rustlers. Doesn’t make sense, but so help me that’s what they were doing. Then the plane started to fall and it fell for the next 10 minutes of the program. Down they plunged. Frantically they worked the controls. For 10 minutes I plunged with them. Then—CRASH! “Timber!” the wife screams. “Steady, Pop,” one of the boys says. “After all, Pop, it’s only a ra dio program,” the other says. Then I understood. For 10 min utes I had been holding the bowl of peas aloft as I plunged with the plane. With the crash the bowl of peas crashed. “I’ll have my coffee in the liv ing room,” I mumbled and fled their laughter. I can hardly wait until tomorrow. How did they get out of that crash alive? They must have, because the program is go ing to be on at its scheduled time FIGHTS FOR OIL Sen. Hollywood is third in network video originations, placing below Chicago and far, far behind New York City . During the week of January 11. 1953, for ex ample, the four major networks transmitted 13514 hours of pro gramming (12214 live), and all from New York Chicago to talled 17 hours live and Hollywood only 11 hours live Any ques tions now as to where the TV cap ital is at present? Jack Bailey says “Only a major switch to TV films will change that ration of originations and give Hollywood a break . . On ‘live’ originations, the east always will have the edge over the west, if only because of mileage costs, but give us films and that trend will become a stampede—and Hollywood will more than match New York’s live originations with filmed shows” . . Of course, what Bailey fails to point out is that there never was any question that Hollywood, for obvious reasons, would surpass other cities in films. The big. burning issue the past few years has been, could Hollywood produce a good live show and so far they have shown little.
