The eight negro schools of this district, 'Elisha Jr. High, Hannah, Burton, Trinity, Dan Watkins, Smith Hill, Vaughn- ville and Mudlic, with a total faculty of 19 and an enrollment of approximately 550 began their 1951-1952 summer session on July 23, 1951, and will close for crop harvesting on August 24. The fall term will begin on October 8th and continue for a full 9 months term. MRS. MARY WEST (continued from page one) sons died in infancy. Surviving are the following daughters, Mrs. Clem I. Youmans, Mrs. Eugene W. Yates, Mrs. Chris A. Kauf- mann, all of Newberry; Miss Mary Pearle West of Columbia, and one son, Robert H. West of Louisville, Ky., also one step-son, B. W. West of Terre Haute, Indi ana, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at her home at. 1805 Main street, Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m., conducted by Rev. G. H. Hodges, assisted by Rev. H. C. Ritter of Manning . Interment followed in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers were M. L. Youmans, Wilson Yates, Dr. Rives Chalmers, Fr^nk West, Harold Epps, and Steve Griffith, Jr. The honorary escort was com posed of the Members of the Board of Stewards of Central Methodist church, and Dr. R. Esra Vornholt of Okarche, Okla., was elected president of the School for Town and Country Ministers held at Emory Univer- Farm Committee Calls Meeting For August 27 The Newberry County Agricul tural Mobilization Committee has called a county-w T ide meeting of farmers to be held at the New berry County Courthouse, Monday afternoon, August 27, at 2:30 P. M. The committee is composed of the head of each agency repre senting the U. S. Department of Agriculture operating in the coun ty and includes: James W. Abrams, PMA Com mitteeman; Ashby E. Long, PMA; James B. Cartwright, U. S. Forest Service; T. B. Amis, SCS; M. P. McMeekin, FHA; M. B. Hendrix, Ag. Teachers Assoc.; P. B. „ Ezell, Extension Service Paul H. Long, PMA Committee man; and Chalmers Brown, PMA Committeeman. All farmers and other inter ested in farming are invited to attend the meeting which is call ed to make a full and intensive review of the best means of im proving the various programs and policies, and particularly to de cide how the various agencies can provide more effective, efficient and economic service to farm families during this period of mobilization emergency. All sug gestions will be welcomed and re corded for study in regard to j any of the agencies. Topics listed for discussion at the meeting include: i. Portion of the programs that should be retained and continued on the present basis; 2. Portion of the programs that should be eliminated or abolished; 3. Recomipended changes in the pro grams; 4. Suggested new pro grams that should be considered to meet the needs and problems of farm families that are ^ot now being met. Farmers are urged by the com mittee to attend and be prepared to participate in the discussion of how the various U. S. D. One feature was a banquet August 21 in recognition of 14 Southern pastors who had been named by a farm magazine as “rural minister of the year” from their States.
