Aided by Cook’s description, of ficers found witnesses in both Ar kansas and Oklahoma who said they had seen the Missouri ex convict with the Mossers, On the basis of such evidence, the FBI filed a charge of kipnap with Intent to do bodily harm against Cook at Oklahoma City and the State filed five separate murder charges against him at Pawhuska, Okla. Police, acting on a tip from a one-time fellow convict of Cook, found the bodies. They said the man, who was not Identified, told them Cook once threatened to throw him down the same shaft, about a block from Joplin’s busi ness district. Searchers first found a little girl’s shoe near the shaft open ing. About 60 feet below surface they came upon three bodies floating ih the stagnant water. Further search brouht out the other two. Officers said all members of the family apparently had been beaten. Father and son had been shot. Mosser, his wife and the older boy had. their hands tied be hind their backa. - The basis for' the suspicion that'Cook killed .three other per* sons in addition to the Mossers, is a statement he Is reported to have made to Deputy Sheriff Homer Waldrip of Blythe, Calif., oh Jan. 6 and the slaying of Robert H. Dewey, Seattle sales man. Waldrip said he was kidnapped by Cook. He said he knew the fugitive because Cook had work ed at a Blythe restaurant where Waldrip’s wife was employed. Waldrip quoted Cook as saying; “I’ve killed seven people and Pd Just as soon kill‘'you. ,, Instead, Waldrip said Cook abandoned him on the roadside and fled in his car. Waldrip’s car was found later and in it was the body of the Seattle salesman Dewey. He had been shot to death and his car stolen. Dewey’s car was found later abandoned in Mexico; thus cen tering the search in that country. MORE TREES’ PROGRAM POINTS TO PROFITS IN TREE GROWING "More Trees for America,” an educational program to encour age the Nation’s woodland own ers to help themselves to tree- growing profits, is in operation in five states today. Originating in Alabama in 1947, the "More Trees” program is aimed primarily at the small woodland owners who control 75 percent of the country’s pri vate commercial forest area. To date more than a quarter of a million of these landowners have been contacted through this program now active in five states. Although the program is ed natic pro- pays, ed m lean &- sponsored nationally by Ameri can Forest Products Industries, Inc., of Washington, D. C, state groups sponsor and direct their own campaigns. In addition to Alabama, "More Trees” pro grams are being conducted in New Hampshire, Virginia, Ver mont and Washington, and sev eral other states are making plans now to join in the movement. State programs take two i: Tne first is to arouse the mdowner’s interest; the second to provide on-the-ground instruc tion in tree growing methods. The interest-arousing phase is built around a special booklet prepared for each state by AFPI. The booklet touches on woods management but is not a forestry handbook. It explains # Five /fates have foined the More Trees for America program.
