THE NEWBERRY SUN FRIDAY, MAY 16, 1950 - • -— ' ■ -- ‘ J SPECTATOR (Contiimied from Page 4) sick, mjaybe they could kill thq genms that make plants decay. So the Department’s research men in California began testing the ant i-b i o t i c s—one after another—an foods in their lab oratories. Suihtiliin seemed to work be£t. “We don’t know just how it works,” says one expert. “Wd only know it seems to, in lab oratories.” The men of the laboratories are oing wonderfully well for us. I feel a bit sorry for my friends, the druggists, for they hardly get in one new anti biotic before they must get an other. And what about the physicians? Will the day come when calomel, ipecac and soda will fall in public esteem? Or when quinine will lose its pop ularity, or Syrup of Squills be no longer in vogue? Well, these old favorites have been gather ing dust for a long time. If the doctor won’t fire a million units of ^omiething in us, or ai us, we won’t be satisfied. In a casual way I hope tha “dose” will be expressed in reasonable figures. Even the present figures are fore sensi ble than the military time: 200 bourse, or whatever it is. I’ve asked a number of men in thi service why 12:45 A.M. would n’t be better than the present way of expressing time. They didn’t know. At any rate some body had to do something big and 'important, so he gave us that. ^ Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Ross and ‘ three children, Barbara, Maxine and Douglas, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mr. and Mirs. Ran dolph Barnes and two Children, Rudy and Susan Marie, of Co lumbia, spent the past week end in the home of Mrs. W. C. Barnes in Prosperity. Mir. and Mrs. J. C. McLane, Jr., and two children', Jimmy and Patty, of Hampton, Va., spent the weekend and Mo ther’s Day here with Mr. Mc- Lane’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Lathan. They spent the first of the week in At lanta, Ga., but returned to Newberry Wednesday, where Mr. McLane will spend the re mainder of the week while Mrs. McLane and children spend a few days in Sumter wiith her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Dean. SPORTS AFIELD (Continued from Page 5) patches. Firing any gun with grease in the bore or chamber may cause the barrel to burst. This is all the care that the bare requires. Simple, isn’t it?
