C. v Notice of TAX PENALTY After the Close of Business on MARCH 31st, 1950, a Penalty of A Winter Wonderland From Charleston to New Orleans I have seen a truly “winter wonderland” of flowers in recent weeks.. The mild winter caused the unusual to come about* Both the azaleas and the camellia^ were entirely undamaged by cold and they reached their peaks of beauty at the same time! And they started bloom ing back there in midwinter. This almost unprecedented burst of beauty is causing many to turn to these two of earth’s most beautiful flowers. And nurseries have seen a brisk business in them of late. Ir fact that interest has been growing now for some years. As the late plantings get along in growth, this part of the country will grow more beau tiful by the year. For both of these are long-lived plants. Yearly plantings are just build ing up the potential, and the future is pleasing to contem plate. While most of the na tion is locked in winter, our part of it will be breaking forth in marvelous color and splen dor. Those who know tell me that camellias and azaleas are not very hard to grow. But they do have a few simple require ments about soil and location that must be observed, if they are to thrive. These are car ried in circulars prepared by Clemson’s A. E. Schilletter. They are available free from him. Just address him at Clemson, South Carolina. Have always wanted to, but never thought the chance would come. But now it has, and I’m as thrilled as a kid. Where is there a boy who ever saw an engine that didn’t dream of riding one! The first one I ever saw was old number *T,” a tiny wood burner on the C.N.&L. Ry. that passed within two miles of our place in the Stone Hills of the Dutch Fork on its way from Calumbia to Laurens. I say “tiny ’ now. But it didn’t look that way then. It was the biggest and most frightening thing I had ever seen. I thought folks stood too close to it when it came in to our flag stop at White Rock. And I’d hide my face in my mother’s skirt as the monster ground its brakes to a stop for us. It took us to Columbia in an hour. And, boys, that was fly ing. Parents always held our coat-tails as we leaned out of the windows to see those driv ers roll: And on the curves we could see our idol, old Billy Graham the engineer, playing tunes on that whistle that thrilled us to the core. They usually carried flaxseed along to get cinders out of our eyes with. For those old wood burn ers snorted cinders to beat the band. And at night their con stant shower of sparks scared me. As time went on I saw big ger engines. And they have carried their thrill right on through the years. I said some thing about this here a few weeks ago. I was just beating the air, never thinking any thing would come of it. Tlie day after it was published Bob Mellette of the Atlantic Coast Line called and said my boy hood ambition could be real ized, He had gotten permis sion from the president of the roatj for me to ride their fast est engines! Wbw! Wbat a surprise that w&s. And a thrill too. So now this countryman will mount a heavy freight engine. I want to se e it snort and slip and pound the rails with a great load. Then I’ll get on a fast diesel that bums up the rails with its human cargo, and come back. But the good time will not be over then. For I want to tell you about it. And what a subject I will have!
