REX BEACH TAKES LIFE Sebring, Fla., Dec. 7.—Rex Beach, the rugged chronicler of the rugged men of the reat Northwest, shot himself to death today to end the agony of a throat ailment reported to have been cancer. His nurse, Tnia Simonian, found the 72-year-old author of such he-man classics as “The Spoilers” slumped over his bed at breakfast-time, a bullet wound in his temple. She had just left him to prepare his meal when she heard the shot. A .38-caliber pistol was found near him and a verdict of suicide was announced. BERGEN Clothing Company SAYS TROUBLE WITH WORLD IS BONE HEADS New York, Dec. 7—The trou ble with the world, Bennie Buf- ano observed today, is the “os sified adult mind.” He declared that if peace is to be achieved, there muse be a return to the child’s way of thinking. He intends to do his part. Beniamino (“just call me Bennie, the missionary tramp”) Bufano is a sculptor. He plans to fashion a huge mosaic of many stones depicting the children of the world enfolded in the wings of the American eagle. After showing it in San Fran cisco, his home town, Bufano said he will offer it to the United Nations to hang in one of its new buildings “for in spiration.” The pint-sized sculptor ex plained that grown-ups the world over are hobbled by fix ations, habits and convictions. But children have the right id ea on the Democratic way of life. “You give a kid an icecream cone and what does he do. He eats it” said Bufano. “You give an adult an ice cream cone and what does he do. He eats off why you gave it to him.” “Same thing goes in the Uni ted Nations. Same thing went in the League of Nations. None of us believes anything and we all demand that other people live as we do. . “A kid doesn’t .care how other kids live. He loves everybody.’ Bufano said. In the 20 by 50 foot moasic, he visualizes, each of the 59 nations in the UN will be rep resented by a child. The out spread wings of the American eagle will be around them all. “Singe the UN was started in this country and since we are the melting pot of the SINGLE ACRE YIELDS 5-BALE COTTON CROP What may be an all-time cotton production record was reported this season on the farm of C. B. Peay in Oktibbe ha County, Mississippi, where the incredible total of five bales of cotton was produced on a single acre. To experienced farmers, who think they have achieved top production when they grow two bales per acre, the five- bale story is an item worthy of Robert Ripley’s “believe it or not” columns. Mr. Peay’s neighbors will testify to the veracity of his story, as will the records showing sums he has paid to cotton pickers for gathering his crop. Mr. Peay grew the amazing cotton yield on land that is generally regarded as some of the poorest in the area. The field has been inspected by scores of farmers and agricul tural experts. They attribute • Mr. Peay’s fabulous production to a perfect combination of j weather, seed, fertilizer, and j work. The land was relinquished to! the bank some years ago when the original owner found it so unproductive it would not pay. (Mr. Peay bought the land and with his wife and two sons be gan the slow process of build ing it up. This season the Mississippi farmer concentrated his efforts on the acre he had selected as his best. He used 500 pounds of 5-10-5 fertilizer and applied 200 pounds of ammonium ni trate as a side dressing later. He poisoned early and contin ued to poison through the sea son. Pickers who gathered the cotton brought in a bale at the I first picking. They told the ’ land owner then he would have five bales on the acre. At that time, Mr. Peay laughed at them. Today he is laughing in a different way—his records show that 2504 pounds have been gathered, worth about $750 at current prices.
