It did not depend upon a compli cated world to bring it oil from Louisiana and Texas nor coal from West Virginia or Ken tucky in order that its hearth stone be kept warm. A great log inferno roared in the spac ious fireplace. And a mountain of dry wood, cut from the pasture and neatly stacked under a shed, told of homemade warmth for the coming weeks of winter. What solidarity, security, and contentment lingered there around the well-worn hearth! Peanuts from his fields, apples from his orchard, and cookies from his kitchen delighted us as we talked by the winter fireside. The spacious living room was plainly and comfor tably furnished with things hallowed by long use and pleasant memories. Left of the fireplace, by the window, the floor was dented by grand father’s chair. He always sat there, where he could poke the fire and look out of the window across the pasture and see the bend of the road and the neighbors who occasionally passed. And now that’s his son’s place. He sat there in comfort, with arm resting on RITZ THEATRE THURSDAY 8t FRIDAY John Payne, Joan Caulfield, Dan Duryea, Shelley Winters "Larceny" Musical Short—Big Sister Blues FOX NEWS \ SATURDAY Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Joan Caulfield Billy DeWolfe Olga San Juan "Blue Skies" (In Technicolor) Also Short— Pantry Panic MONDAY 8c TUESDAY Edmund Gwenn. Cromers. D. E. Schumpert the window sill, as his dad had done during his time. Before dark I walked with him to the barn to feed, water, and stable the stock. The boys were milking and piling a new supply of wood on the end of the porch. The crib was full of corn, the power for that farm, and the loft bulged with hay. He had killed his meat for the year, and the two big hogs remaining in the pen were for his lard, he said. He had kept them a little longer so they would turn out more. And I could go on talking about this bastion of security and plenty. But 1 must hurry. That supper from home grown things was a feast of good cooking, and they hadn’t known I was coming. That night I floated away on a featherbed that felt like the long ago to me. Breakfast came soon, while the ‘stars were still shining. And what a meal that was too. Country ham that penetrated clear to my bedroom, fried fresh eggs, grits with red ham gravy, hot biscuits, fresh butter, honey, and I lost sight of all else in the gastronomic glow of those delights. And, as if that hadn’t been enough, they insisted that I drink a large glass of very good locust and persimmon beer as we passed th e smoke house on our way to the barn. Feeling fine, and ready to pop, I backed the old car from under the shed and lit out. I got stuck on the way to the highway, for it had rained the day before. Yet I did not feel that this man who lives back there at the end of the road was the unfortunate one at all. I was in a hurry. But what did he care about that road being impassable for a while. There was nothing for him to get out of there for days and and perhaps weeks to come. He had plenty of sugar, pepper, salt, and coffee. Aiter I got to going again < I thought of that economic fortification, and of how it could stand against the adver sities of time in the atomic age. It might not supply some of the changin'* luxury gadgets of the twentieth century. But for those whose will is strong and constant, and who live close to the things Nature has put here, it carries about the only real security this earth has yet seen.
