Gibson and Mr. Gibson. Mrs. Charlie Boland of Saluda visited Mrs. Cora Sligh several days last week. Mrs. G. W. Shealy and Mrs. Muscoe Alewine spent last Thursday in Ware Shoals as the guests Mrs. Janie Lindsey. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Crumpton and Mr. R. J. Crumpton spent Sunday in Columbia Miss Dorothy Taylor spent Thursday in Whitmire with her sister Mrs. W. O. Green. Mr. and Mrs. John Herman Koon and children, Marilyn and Wayne of Lancaster, were weekend visitors in the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs. J. D. Koon. Imogene Livingston spent Satur day night in Newberry with Margie Livingston. Mrs. A. E. Lominick had visiting her the weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Aull and son John Lewis. Miss Winona Shealy of Co lumbia was a guest Sunday with Miss Anne Enlow. SfSgt and Mrs. Roy Shealy and son Jim of Columbia, Visited Mrs. Shealy’s mother Mrs. Nettie Kibler during the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Belton Kinard spent the weekend with rela tives near Newberry. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Koon, Mr. and Mrs. Edd Thomas and little daughters were visitors in Columbia Sunday afternoon. Jim Shealy of Columbia is spending this week with his grand mother, Mrs. Nettie Kib ler. Mrs. Bennie Wicker and daughter Sallie of Columbia were guests Sunday of Miss Della Wicker. James Hare In Congress Race RESERVISTS NEEDED FOR RECRUIT DUTY Members of the Army’s en listed reserve corps who hold certain military occupational specialist ratings a re needed for active duty enlistments of 9 or 12 months with the recruit ing service in South Carolina. This announcement was made last week by Major John A. Martin of the recruiting serv ice. Major Martin also stated that in addition to regular pay and other allowances, men called for this duty will receive $105 a month as rations and quarters allowance. It is expected that all enlisted reservists volunteer ing and qualifying for this duty will be recalled to active duty about July 1, in the grade held in the ERC, and will be sta tioned in the Carolinas. Interested reservists are urged to contact the local recruiting station, opposite the fire de partment, for full particulars. STATEMENT OF JAMES B. HARE ACCOMPANYING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR CONGRESS It shall be my purpose to conduct a dean, honorable, pro gressive, and vigorous campaign, during which I shall discuss the numerous public problems and offer for the people’s considera tion what I consider a proper interpretation and solution. It is impossible to declare one’s position on all public questions in a brief announcement, but will now state my position on some matters which the public may want to know. 1. I shall make it clear at the outset that I am a Demo crat who believes in and will follow to the best of my ability the principles of the Democratic Party as enunciated by Thomas Jefferson and others responsi ble 4 for its formation. 2. ‘ I am opposed to the Civil Rights rogram, in its entirety, as proposed by President Tru man, for it is unfair, unjust, illegal, a nd unconstitutional. 3. In business relations with other countries, I favor the Re ciprocal Trade Agreement poli cy as against the High protec tive Tariff system. 4. I am opposed to a compul sory military training program in peace time, but I favor a military training program in our secondary schools, the enlarge ment of the National Guard a nd Naval Reserve, the establish ment of a Voluntary Air Force Training program, and the cre ation of a permanent national defense program sufficient to make our shores invulnerable. 5. I favor a more permanent and definite policy relating to agriculture, which I shall be glad to discuss more fully dur ing the campaign. 6. I believe in the right of the States to establish their own educational systems, which should n°t be disturbed by the federal government, but since the congress h a s invaded the field of taxation that belongs to the several States, I believe the Congress should now pro vide a direct annual grant to the several States for school purposes, with n o conditions or limitations attached. 7. I am opposed to the uni form system of education re cently proposed by the Truman Commission. When all the people in a nation are trained to think alike a totalitarian system of Government or some thing worse will follow, as oc curred in Germany under Hit ler. 8. I believe in the right of any group of persons similarly interested to organize for the promotion of their social, edu cational, moral interests and such, and they should be pro tected by law in the exercise of such rights. 9. I am opposed to an organi zation of any kind that has for its purpose the promotion of an entirely new political system and the destruction of our dem ocratic system of government, and I favor an amendment to our Constitution making such action treasonable. 10. I favor, the reduction of administrative expenses in gov ernment, and the inauguration of a definite policy that will insure a reduction in our pub lic debt at least one hundred billion dollars within the next decade. Our country cariTiot take the chance of carrying the present indebtedness for an in definite period. James B. Hare MRS. MATTIE SENN Mrs. Mattie Swindler Senn, 74 widow of Jerome J. Senn, died Wednesday at the Newberry county hospital following sev eral weeks of illness. She was the daughter of the late Wister and Rachel Frank lin Swindler, and was a life long resident of the county. Her husband died in 1938. Surviving are two brothers, Charlie Swindler of Saluda and Wister Swindler of Newberry; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Lake of Laurens; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Leavell Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. H. W. Long and Dr. J. B. Harman. Interment followed in West End cemetery NOTICE TO VOTERS •The Democratic Club En rollment Books were senj out several days ago, and informa tion is that very few are en rolling. If you have not en rolled, go to your enrollment place and place your name on the Democratic Club Roll. After June 22, you cannot enroll as that is the dead line. You are urged to do this as this is an important election year, and a number of important offices are to be filled. If you don’t give a hoot about good government or the welfare of your county, state or nation, then stay at home.
