By Ted Kesting If you are in a quandry about how to chose one of the new auto-top boats, Willard Crandall, boating authority and writer, has a few suggestions to help you. Don’t be confused by the great variety of materials—plas tic, plywood, canvas-covered wood, metal—from which these boats are built. Size and design are of first importance when choosing a portable model. Consider the size of waterway, load to be carried, and motor to be used. When these three speci fications have been met such matters as speed, comfort and handling qualifications can Be taken up. It is iwy difficult to give hard and fast rules as to just what size boat is required for any particular lake or load, but ! the standard auto-top boat should not be used on waters over 10 miles long, nor should more than three persons be car ried aboard. The importance of securing ample beam in an auto-top boat cannot be over-emphasized. Sea worthiness in a small fishing boat depends on beam; also on the height of the sides and to a limited extent, on length. Stability depends on beam,' and largely bottom design. A flat bottom is, as such, more stable than a round bottom. Don’t carry the -search for seaworthiness too far. Narrow beam, round bottom mean speed and efficiency, and a portable boat to be rowed on a small river or lake should possess at least the first of these two characteristics and also have low sides for easier rowing. Formerly a three or four h.p. outboard was about the top li mit for any standard auto-top, but now a few of these boats are designed especially for more powerful motors. If a motor is to be bought as well as boat, the best procedure is usually to choose the boat first, then a size motor to fit it. A lot of people stress the im portance of weight. Don’t worry too much about it. Today car- top carriers can be purchased with rollers for easy loading, and authorities agree that even coupes can carry 20-foot canoes and boats up to 200 pounds.
