That mattered little until a sharp hidden grav el made a clean cut through the bark of my rear system one day. That put a stop to our sliding down raw, After that an old piece of tin was our chariot. But the most fun down there came right after big rains. A sheet of water woved down the grassy sope and pitched over in to our canyon. It was a veritable Niagara to us at one place where the 12-foot wall was straight up. The water turned to muddy red as it swirled in the chasm be low and whipped up a great bank of foam on the other side. We figured there must be a sizable space behind that water fall, as it pitched out a good ways from the walls there. I was selected to explore behind that falling wall of water to see what it looked and sounded like. I hung my overalls on a limb and waded in. The water made a frightening roar as I neared it, and I could feel the swirling gravel and debris again st my legs. As I got to the water I held my nose and walked right through it. I had not counted on a slop ing slick bottom upwards near the wall. My feet slipped out from under me and my face went down, as I slid right back under the falling water. It poun ded and churned me around on the bottom before I regained my feet and Sheepishly walked out. The other kids went wild with laughter, I was such a funny sight. Another reason why parents turn grey. For boys are just that way you know. But des pite these capers, we all sur vived the reckless age of country boys. Although there are a thousand wonders that we did And boys are the same today. Unfortunately, many of them do not have the wild, glorious and untamed country to caper in, though. MILK ROUTES Two milk routes have been started in Chesterfield. “Not many cows at first”, says County Agent Willis, '‘But we had to start from somewhere and that’s where we were”. They are all small farmers, mostly sellng the surplus from their family cow or two. Leander Lisenby said his check was $25 for the previous month from a “stripper” and his other full milker. That was for milk above family needs. And the truck got it daily from his door. Philip Rivers drives that route and he had 21 customers when I was there. Willis is working with everyone on a feed and grazing program, and also on route ex tensions as fast as possible. Monday Special... That important pause before the cast is a step many fly fish ermen overtook. They almost al ways make it too short, or re fuse to pause at all. Remember: begin the back cast with the rod no higher than half way up; end it with the main part of the rod no farther back than “one o’clock”; and pause until the line is almost straight, but not falling below the horizontal.
