Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sharp, Columbia were weekend visitors of Mrs. J, M, Keith. Mr. Jarret of Charleston has been visiting relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Coleman visited in Durham, N. C., the past week. / We are sorry to report that Mrs. J. B. McAdams has been sick for several days. We hope she will soon be feeling improv ed. Dr. W. J. Holloway and child ren were visiting in the com munity Saturday. Mrs. C. L. Smith is able to be home from the Greenwood hospital. Mrs. W. E. Spearman, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Swindler and moth er are visiting relatives in South Georgia over the weekend. WILL AWARD FARMERS CONSERVATION PAPERS Plans for awarding certificates of merit to farmers who have done an outstanding job of soil conservation farming have been completed, according to an an nouncement by J. B. Douthit, President of the State Associa tion of Soil Conservation District Supervisors, and I. P. x McWhite, President of the South Carolina Bankers Association. These certificates are being awarded jointly by the locaJ bankers and district supervisors. The farmers receiving them will be chosen from those who hav< developed and applied the soil conservation plan for their farms. They will be selected by a committee from each county. In 1937 the South Carolina legislature passed an enabling act making it possible for local farmers to create a soil conser vation district. At this time 26 districts have been formed, cov ering the entire area of the state. Each district has a gov erning body of five farmers who are designated as district super visors. The State Association of Soil Conservation District Sup ervisors is an organization of all district governing bodies. The officers of the State Association J are: J. B. Douthit, Pendleton, president; C. B. Player, Bishop- ville, vice-president; and W. A. Campbell, Sheldon, secretary. In addition to the officers, the Executive Council is composed of E. P. Glascock, Catawba; T. T. Tray wick, Cope; J. G. Mur ray, Edisto Island; and J. B. Gambrell, Greenwood. The South Carolina Bankers Association has for several years sponsored various activities de signated to promote soil conser vation sfnd better land use. It has conducted two essay contests in the public schools, and bank ers in the various counties have sponsored many local contests. The officers of the Bankers As sociation are: I. P. McWhite, Lake City, president; Burnell ; Sloan, Columbia, first vice- I president; Harry Arthur, Union,! second vice-president: and E. R. j Alexander, Columbia, executive i secretary. Members of the Com mittee on Agriculture of the j Bankers Association are: J|. B. Grambell, Greenwood, chairman; Frank Salmon, Marion; O. S. SOCIAL SECURITY NOT TO BE HERE TUESDAY Representatives of the Social Security administration, Green wood, will not be in Newberry on Tuesday, November 11, due to the Armistice Day holiday. Meeks of Augusta, Ga., and granddaughter of Mrs. Evie*- iou Gore of Newberry, died Sat urday night at Newberry coun ty hospital. The child and her mother were visiting relatives here when she became ill. Surviving in addition to her parents and maternal grand mother, are her paternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T.
