ELEAZER, Clemson Ext. Information Specialist) Another ancient art, cotton picking, succumbs to the mach ine. Senator Paul Wallace of Marl boro was picking a bale an hour with his. Said he liked it very much. Wants another one as soon as he can get it. Hisi machine-packed cotton was bringing one cent a pound less than hand picked at the same time. He picked twice, ten days apart, and “simply got it all,” as he put it. He pointed out that with these pickers a farmer can get his cotton out on time, avoid weath er damage, and aid diversifica tion.. He explained the latter by be ing able to get fall grain and cov er crops in on cotton land, where the harvest was completed soon after it was all open. In the past, much of our cotton land has been tied up until away out in late winter and early spring getting the stuff picked. At Clemson’s Blackville sta tion too, they were doing a near perfect job the other day when I followed the picker a while. They have fully mechanized cotton there. Two men have produced 200 acres. And in Marion, I learn, Tom Clark has secured a picker with which custom work is being done. A ginner in one county tells me that he hopes to get several pickers — perhaps six — with which he will contract to pick for his patrons. He will also haul it and gin it. The shackles of high human labor requirement are sure be ing broken from cotton. And that implies much to this part of the country. Most of it is good too. We’ll talk more about that some other time.
