Marine Corps photo.) MEDALS READY FOR ELIGIBLE VETERANS Major John A. Martin, com manding officer of the U. S. Army Recruiting station in Co lumbia, announced today that the World War II Victory med al and the American Defense Service medal with foreign serv ice clasps and bronze service stars will be ready for issue to eligible Army veterans today. According to Major Martin, an honorably discharged Army vet eran who served between Sep tember 8, 1939 and December 7, 1941, under orders to active duty for a period of 12 months or longer is eligible for the Ameri can Defense Service medal. In the event he was serving out side the continental limits of the United States between these dates, he is entitled to a foreign service clasp to be affixed to the medal and a bronze service star for the ribbon. Applications for these medals may be made by letter or by ap plying in person to the U. S. Army Recruiting station, 1703 Main Street, Columbia, S. C. Major Martin also stated that next of kin of personnel who died after leaving the Army may apply in the same way for these medals. Carriers At Fault In Oil Shortage In response to numerous in quiries the Standard Oil Com pany of New Jersey today issued the following statement: The present demand for oil products is higher than ever be fore in history. The ability of the industry to meet this un precedented demand is strained not by lack of crude oil in the ground, but by limitations of transportation and other facili ties occurring largely as a result of the war. Most oil companies are having difficulty in meeting the full demands of their custo mers for products. Such a sit uation usually results in an in crease in product prices which brings out added supplies and tends to balance supply and de mand. A number of price in creases have recently taken place. It is our opinion, howev er, that under present condi tions where a shortage of fabri cated steel and other materials limits the industry’s ability to produce, transport and refine more crude oil further price in creases in either crude or prod ucts will not be effective in in creasing the overall supply of petroleum products. We feel that such price increases would omy be inflationary and should be resisted. Standard Oil Company of New Jersey believes so strongly that further increases- in the price of crude oil or products under pres ent conditions are not in the best interest of either the oil in dustry or the public, that it is following the general policy oT not increasing prices unless such increases will tend to main tain or bring out additional sup plies. As is the case with most other Oil Companies, the prod ucts of Standard Oil Company of New Jersey reach the consu mer principally through Dealers and Distributors and the Com pany believes that its “Hold thtr Line” policy has not worked a hardship on these independent businessmen who handle Esso products. By Ted Kesting The Army Air Forces and the Forest Service combine to de velop new combat technique against forest fires. Major Dave Harbour, champion of the air plane in the field of outdoor sport, reveals the developments which are being made. With the close of the Second World War, the Army Air Forces desired to make its facilities available for beneficial activities on the civilian and other home fronts. The Forest Service was anxious to test the water-con tainer missile and other methods of combating and controlling for est fires. In view of the combat successes by the Air Forces and development of bombing tech niques, plus improvements of old equipment and the development of new, it was felt that the two agencies could work together even more effectively than be fore. One of the big jobs handed the Army Air Forces in expedit ing this joint program was as sisting the Forest Service in determining the effectiveness ol Army ’Air Forces’ co-operation in controlling forest fires in their early stages, and the equipments and techniques best suited to accomplish this control. With much pertinent information fur nished by the Forest Service the A. A. F. went to work. The object of this mission, from a national conservation standpoint, was an important one. Because of the remoteness of most of our nation’s forest fires, considerable time is often required to bring fire fighting equipment and personnel of the Forest Service within effective range of a fire. During this in terval, fires grow to large pro portions and are often out of control when the fire fighters do arrive on the scene of action. Since many forest fires develop rather slowly, if small new fires could be extinguished or even controlled from the air until the ground fighters could arrive, many thousands of valuable for est acres and considerable wild life could be saved annually. The first phase justified the continuance of the second phase of the test . . . the establish ment of an effective and work able system of Army Air Forces and Forest Service co-ordination in controlling forest fires. The forest areas of the north west were selected as the most appropriate site for this last all-out and conclusive phase. Missoula, Montana, has been tentatively selected as the com bined Army Air Forces and For est Service tests headquarters. The effectiveness of air for mation attack will be deter mined; air-ground communica tions for ground control of aii> craft systems will be tested; B-29’s will attempt to “box-in” fires with foam; Forest Service personnel, at the scene of each fire, will evaluate the effective ness of attacks and of bombs, and the effectiveness of new chemicals will be determined. From the Missoula tests it is hoped there will evolve a work able system of Army Air Forces and Forest Service co-ordination in controlling forest fires, which will enable these two agencies to effectively plan on a nation wide basis and from year to year a campaign which will stop many of the nation’s forest fires before they reach the un- controllable stage.
