Mower will sell at public outcry to the highest bidder on salesday in July (the 7th day of the month), 1947, be fore the Courthouse door at Newberry, South Carolina, at 11:00 o’clock A. M., the lot of land known as the Rutherford School District lot, situate in Rutherford School District, New berry County, containing two (2) acres, more or less, bounded by the old Ashford Ferry Road and lands of J. A. Felker, and which is traversed by the new State highway from Newberry to Strother. This lot of land was given to Rutherford School Dist rict by Mr. Mower so long as the same was used for school purposes. Rutherford school having been abandoned, the property is now’ owned by Mr. Mower’s estate. The lot has an excellent well and some valuable timber thereon. TERMS OF SALE: Cash. The purchaser will be required to deposit immediately when the property is bid in 25% of the purchase price, and the balance will be payable within ten days on delivery of deed. National Bank The Bible In The Public Schools By Harry Clark* Because I contact all of the high schools of the state, many have written asking as to the extent of teaching of Bible in the high schools and elementary schools and as to the impression such teaching has made upon me. Superintendents testify that it has made a difference in dis cipline on the playground, and even on the school busses, that it has enabled students to under stand references to the Bible in the poets, orators, novelists, and dramatists in their English Lit erature course; and that it has made a difference in the history classes. Students who take the course seem more earnest and purposeful. Nowhere have I found any controversies over creed arising. The teachers teach the facts only, and when ever a question as to the doc trine arises they refer the stu dents to their parents or min isters. It is surprising the num her of students taking the course who were not previously Sunday school attendants. It leads to the students volunteer ing to be Sunday school teach ers. It is taught by the regular public school teacher as part of her regular load and on her reg ular salary at Marion (five class es), York, Clover, Chester, Flor ence (temporarily discontinued), Manning 1943-1944, Conway (three classes), Union, most of the high schools of Horry Coun ty, in the fifth and sixth grades at Orangeburg and the fourth and fifth grades at Blythewood, Clio. The local textile mill pays for the teacher of Bible at Ware Shoals, Monarch, Lockhart, and Whitmire. A board of religious education has been set up at Rock Hill, Clinton, Winnsboro, Darlington, and Hartsville. This board rais es the money by popular sub scription, employs its own teach ers and determines the course of study. All the school does is to provide a room and give credit. At the following places, a minister comes to the school one period a week and the school gives one-fourth credit; Lexing ton, Hemingway, Indiantown, Silver Street, Bush River, Swan sea (temporarily discontinued) Sharon (in Abbeville County), Society Hill. At Chesterfield, three churches pay their pastors extra to teach the Bible at the high school. I am familiar with the suc cessful operation of this plan at Chattanooga for twenty years, and at Knoxville; it has been taught successfully since 1933. At both cities the juvenile court judges state that they have never had one of the Bible stu dents brought into their courts. In • the bounds of Enoree Pres- byterial Auxiliary, in Cherokee county, “A Child’s Story Bible,” by Catherine F. Vos is placed in every school in this county and used in each class room. In Spartanburg county, “A Child’s Story Bible,” by Cather ine F. Vos, was placed by the Library Aid Association, in co operation with the superintend ent of education, in every class room of the grammar schools to be used “for their devotionals.” Union county has a Bible teacher in the grammar schools of Monarch and Lockhart. In Greenville “the schools in the Parker district have some religious instruction.” Simpsonville has had Bible in the high school for the second year. “It has worked exceeding ly well.” It is financed from members of all the churches in the town and surrounding com munities. NOTICE OF ELECTION Pursuant to the provisions of section 5330 of the code of laws of South Carolina for 1942, as amended by an act of the Gen eral Assembly of 1947 relating to the method and manner in which school districts in New berry County may levy special taxes for school purposes, an election is ordered to be held in the new court house in School District No. 1 on Tuesday, July 22, between the hours of 8:00 A. M. and 4:00 P. M., to deter mine whether an additional tax levy of fifteen (15) mills shall be levied on the property of said school district and to deter mine whether the present eight (8) mill levy for the retirement of bonds shall be retained for general school purposes upon the retirement nf such school bonds. The taxes so levied will be used to make repairs to school build ings, to meet the increased cost of fuel and school supplies, to provide additional school facili ties, to enlarge the educational program, and to provide supple ments to teachers’ salaries. The election shall be conduct ed according to general election rules and only such residents as return real or personal property for taxation and present a regis tration certificate and a 1946 tax receipt shall be entitled to vote.
