Clemson.—Plans for inaugu rating the seed certification pro gram in this state have now been completed and details and appli cation blanks for growers desir ing this service are being mailed to county agents and vocational agricultural teachers, according to Robert H. Garrison, associate plant breeder of the South Caro lina Experiment station here at Clemson. Mr. Garrison pointed out that the purpose of the program is to maintain and make available high quality seed and propagat ing materials of superior varie ties of crops or plants so grown and distributed .as to insure gen etic purity. Farmers who desire certifica tion must prove the source of their planting seed.- Seed pur chased direct from a recognized plant breed or certified by an approved certifying agency will be considered eligible seed stock for producing certified seed from the resulting crop, Mr. Garrsion stated. In the certification program a field inspection will be made of the growing crop sometime be tween the maturity of the crop Clemson.—Green ranges have been found to be high in nutri tive value and to be excellent sources of protiens, minerals, and vitamins, according to P. H. Gooding, Clemson extension poultry specialist, who says the addition of tender green foliage often improves rations that the apparently adequate. Judicial plantings of rye, oats, wheat, barley, Sudan grass, and Italian rye grass furnish a suc culent growth for temporary grazing, while lespedeza furnish es green growth during the hot dry months of summer and Ber muda grass gives a permanent sod for sanitation and green feed. Liming and fertilizinjg help to prepare a soil for nutritious and palatable growth of green feed, for the calcium and phosphorus is taken up by the grasses and made available to the poultry. Green feed is more important now than ever before, Mr. Good ing points out, since all poultry feeds will contain a much higher percentage of plant protien be cause of the scarcity of animal proteins. These plant proteins do not supply the quantity of vitamins and minerals that ani- and the harvesting of the seed to determine genetic purity, pres ence or absence of noxious weeds, insects or diseases; isola-.. tion distances, acreages to be certified, estimated yields, gen eral conditions under which the crop was grown, and facilities for harvesting, cleaning and stor age of the seed. An inspection will also be made of the seed in the bins af ter they have been cleaned and graded and an official sample will be sent to the seed labora tory of the State Department of Agriculture for an offioial test as to purity and germination. If results of the field inspection and laboratory tests show the seed meet certification stand ards, the grower will be eligible to receive th official certification tags of the South Carolina Seed Certification Service at nominal costs. Applications for certifi cation of small grains must be made by April 20, tobacco and hybrid corn by May 1, and fall harvested crops by July 1. In terested growers should imme diately file application with county agents, vocational agri cultural teachers, or with Mr. Garrison, TIRE PRESSURE TALKS Many automobile accidents are caused by the driver’s inability to check his tire pressure while cruising along the highway. A new device will warn drivers if their tires are losing air. The tire pressure meter consists of a buz zer and five lights set in a dash board box, which warn the driv er of tire pressure changes. The indicator is wired through to five Monel butto-ns mounted on the tire rims. When the pres sure changes, the button on the tire affected atcivates a signal which warns motorists against excessive wear on the tire and possible disaster. -JONQUILS FOR SALE. Mrs. Jos. J. Kilgore, Route No. 2, Newberry, S. C. 34-46-1 A good green range is one of the poultryman’s best assur ances of avoiding nutritional troubles in growing chicks. However, Mr. Gooding says that most any kind of poultry feed can be used with reasonable success if an abundance of green feed and sunshine is supplied.
